When No One is Looking

Whoever walks blamelessly will be saved, but he who is perverse in his ways will suddenly fall. Proverbs 28:18 NKJV

Integrity is defined as the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles or moral uprightness. But I’ve often heard it more simply put as doing what is right, even when no one is looking.

When we are lost and without Jesus, we think we can hide our sin. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I’m speaking from personal experience. We think if no one knows or sees, it’s all good. The problem with that is the One who matters most sees. God knows when we sin, and we can’t hide it from Him. So, I guess you could say there is never a time in our lives when no one is looking. God sees what’s in a man’s heart according to 1 Samuel 16:7. God is omnipotent, meaning he knows all things, even those thoughts you shouldn’t be having.

Proverbs 15:3 says, “The eyes of the LORD are everywhere, observing the wicked and the good.” God sees all and hears all. This is why it is so important for us to adhere to our Scripture passage for today. We must walk blamelessly. We must exhibit integrity in all we do. It’s not optional for Christians.

I know this is sometimes easier said than done, but we are told in Galatians 5:16 that if we walk in the Spirit, we will not fulfill the desires of the flesh. Paul goes on to say here that the flesh and the Spirit oppose each other, and if we aren’t careful to walk in the Spirit, we can find ourselves doing things we don’t want to do. It can also cause us to not do things we know we should do.

Sin always looks good. This is how it entices us. It’s so easy to tell ourselves that no one will know. The devil will tell us that we are smarter than everyone else, so we can certainly get away with it. The problem is that God will know. It will not look so good, or enticing, when it starts to cause you trouble, and rest assured, it will.

So, before it gets to that point, do a little self-assessment. Are there things you do when no one is watching that you wouldn’t want anyone to know about? Are there things you do simply because you are sure you can “get away with it”? If so, keep something in mind. God is watching. God knows what you are doing. And God punishes our sin. We are told in 2 Corinthians 5:10 that we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

You may get away with your sinful behavior for a while, but you won’t get away with it forever. There will come a time when we will all be judged for our sins.

If you have a sin that has a hold of you, turn to God. He will cleanse you from your sin (1 John 1:9). He will also help you resist the temptation to continue in your sin. We are told in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that no temptation has overtaken us except that which is common to all men or women. God is faithful, and He will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape.

If you are sinning and thinking you can get away with it, know that this is not going to end well. Repent of your sin and give it over to God. Let Him remove you from the bondage of that sin. Enjoy the freedom that comes from trusting in and obeying Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

And always remember, when you think no one is looking, do what is right because God sees all. He knows all about it. You haven’t kept anything from Him.

Have a great day!
