I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without Me.
John 15:5 HCSB
There are times when I set out to write this blog that an idea I had upon waking came to me. There are also times like today when I have no clue what I’m going to write about. During these times, I realize that this is when God wants to be sure that I realize I am totally dependent upon Him. It’s these times when I pray and tell Him that without Him, I can do nothing. Of course, He understands that because He Himself tells us this in our Scripture passage. I’m not telling Him anything He doesn’t know. I’m just acknowledging that I realize this to be true.
I always find it interesting when people describe themselves as self-made millionaires or whatever they feel they have accomplished all on their own. They fail to realize that we don’t even take a breath without God’s allowing us to do so.
I often listen to the podcast for the show, “I Survived”. I find it interesting at the end of the show why people think they survived. Many attribute their survival to God. But many others say it’s because of their will to live, or their quick thinking, or someone who helped them and leave God out of the equation.
That’s interesting because whether you believe in God or not, He’s in the equation. It’s through Him that we have life. We are here on this planet because He formed us in our mother’s womb. He brought human beings here to be in close fellowship with Him, but many choose not to be.
Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not to lean on our own understanding. It tells us that we should acknowledge God in all we do and He will lead us on the right path. And verse 7 warns us not to consider ourselves wise, but to fear the LORD and turn away from evil.
When we consider ourselves to be wise or capable of great things, we often get into pride. And pride is very dangerous for us; we should avoid it at all costs. In Romans 12:3 Paul warns that we should not think too highly of ourselves, but instead should think sensibly as God has distributed a measure of faith to each of us.
When we adhere to Proverbs 3:5-7, it helps us to remember who is in control. God is sovereign and He controls all things. When we fail to acknowledge Him in all we do we put ourselves in a very precarious situation.
Many of you may be reading this and think, “Well, I do just fine without the Lord.” Or maybe you are reading this and are thinking about someone you know who is very financially well off and fails to acknowledge that God even exists. It’s important that we realize that one day there will come a time of judgment and while that person may have fared well on earth for a short while, they will be doomed to an eternity in hell.
Take a minute to think about the complexities of the human body combined with the complexities of the universe. Think about how we need just enough oxygen and our environment provides that. Think about how God controls this universe that He created. He controls the setting of the sun and the rising of the moon. He controls when it will rain and when storms will come our way.
Without Him we have nothing and we can do nothing. The sooner we realize this and give our all over to Him, the better off we will be. He controls all things, anyway, so why not give yourself over to Him?
Have a great day!
