When God Laughs

The wicked person schemes against the righteous and gnashes his teeth at him. The Lord laughs at him because he sees that his day is coming.   Psalms 37:13

Someone asked me recently if I believed that God has a sense of humor. Let me say that I absolutely believe He does. I think that just the way he pairs opposites to be friends and spouses speaks volumes about his sense of humor.

I found two Scripture passages that speak of God laughing. Psalm 2:4 says, “He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; the LORD shall hold them in derision.” God must find it incredibly funny when we rebel against Him. Rebelling against the creator of the universe, the One who controls all things. When you think about it, it sounds crazy, right? But many choose to rebel against Him today. I can say that I used to be one of those people. God is sovereign; He is in complete control. He will judge those who rebel against Him. This is what Psalm 2:4 is speaking of.

Psalm 37 instructs us on how to respond to those who do evil. Sadly, we are seeing more and more evil behavior in the world today. It begins by saying that we should not fret over evildoers, nor should we envy the wicked.

If you are striving for righteousness and doing your best to be obedient to the Lord and trust in Him, you have nothing to fear from the evildoer.

This Psalm goes on to say that we should instead focus on God and delight in Him. It says that we should make our righteousness shine as the dawn and our justice shine like the noonday. We are told to be silent before the Lord and wait expectantly for Him. God’s got this. We must trust in Him and His timing.

Don’t let someone’s evil plans agitate you and goad you into anger. They are only trying to distract you from focusing on God. Focusing on God is our main job as Christians. We let God handle all the other stuff.

Our Scripture passage does say that the wicked person schemes against the righteous person. This is why we should strive for righteousness. We are called to be imitators of Christ in Ephesians 5:1.

When we read about Jesus in the gospels, we can see that he never fretted when it came to the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Scribes trying to trip him up with trick questions. He always had the answer.

God always has the answer, and He is always in control. We must remember this as we go through life.

The devil wants to distract us from doing what God has called us to do. He will use evil people to do this. We must see this for what it is: it’s a spiritual battle. God wins every time. We must trust in Him.

While there are times God may call us into action, we know that in Psalm 46:10, we are told to be still and know that He is God. I’m sure God must find it funny when we strive to do things on our own. We probably look to Him like an ant trying to move a rubber tree plant. He is the God who can move mountains, but so often we try to do it on our own and on our own terms. I’m sure God gets a good laugh out of that.

God laughs at the wicked who rebel against Him. He knows the judgment they will face. He knows it is useless to rebel against the One who is in complete control.

If you choose to serve the Lord and trust in Him, when He laughs, you can laugh with Him. But if not, He will be laughing at you, and you never want that to happen.

Have a great day!
