The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. Revelation 21:23-24 NKJV
You probably know that as human beings we need sunlight. I find it interesting that God made us that way. According to a study on clevelandclinic.org, sunlight is the primary source of vitamin D which supports, bone health, immune function, mood, and overall well-being. When our skin is exposed to sunlight, a cholesterol compound in the skin is converted into previtamin D3, which is then transformed into active vitamin D or calcitriol which our bodies use for various functions. Their study reported that just 10-30 minutes of sun exposure a few times a week is often sufficient to maintain healthy levels of vitamin D.
This is why someone who is shut in and unable to go outside may need a vitamin D supplement.
Now our Scripture passage tells us that when we get to heaven, we will have no need for the sun or the moon because the glory of God will illuminate heaven and Jesus will be the light. However, in order to get to heaven, we need the Son during our time on earth. So, we not only need to get enough sun, but we need to get plenty of the Son as well while here on earth.
We all know that too much sun exposure can be bad as it can cause burns. But interestingly enough, we can never be over exposed to God’s Son, Jesus Christ. And not enough exposure to the Son here on earth, can cause us to burn for eternity in hell.
We know from our Scripture passage that heaven will be illuminated by God’s glory and Jesus. But as we read in Psalms and John, Jesus also lights our way here on earth as well. In John chapter one, verse one, John said Jesus is the word of God. He goes on to describe how Jesus was there at the creation and all things were created through Him. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
So, we not only need sunlight while we live here on planet earth, but we also need the Son’s light in our lives. We need Him to guide us in all that we do.
We know some sunlight is good for us, but we should not overdo it. If we are exposed to too much sun, it cannot only cause sunburn, but it can cause wrinkles and skin cancer later in life.
Contrary to having too much sun, we need all of the Son’s light we can get. And the more of the Son’s light that we get here on earth, the more certain we can be of spending eternity with Him in heaven.
The temperatures here in Louisiana are almost unbearable, but we should try to get out even if it’s for just a few minutes a few times a week. However, if you fail to bask in the Son’s light while here on earth, you may face a place that’s way hotter than the Louisiana summers.
So, get a little sunlight and lots of the Son’s light and surrender your life to Jesus. Then one day, you will find yourself in a city with streets made of gold, gates of pearl and that has no need for the sun because it gets its light from the Son of God.
Have a great day!
