Therefore whoever hears these saying of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. Matthew 7:24-25 NKJV
In this particular parable, Jesus compares the wise man who built his house on a foundation of rock to a foolish man who built his house on a foundation of sand. In Matthew 7:26-27 Jesus said, “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
James 1:22 says, “”But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” It does us no good to read or even study our Bible and not do what it says. God’s word should be the instruction manual for our lives. We should read His word, study His word and do His word. In James 1:25 it says, “But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and it not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.”
When we do God’s word, we are building on a solid foundation like the man who built on the rock. When we trust in Jesus and make Jesus the foundation for all we do, we have a solid foundation.
If you have ever seen a house with foundation problems, you know that it may tend to sink or sag in certain areas. This can cause internal structural damage like cracks in the walls and other issues.
Well, it’s the same with our lives when we don’t build our lives on a solid foundation. Jesus told us in John 14:6 He is the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father except through Him. Whatever we have or build here on earth is temporary. We must look ahead to eternity and where we will spend eternity. In order to spend eternity with God the Father in heaven, we must build our lives here on earth on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ.
When we build our foundation on things like jobs, wealth and material possessions we may do well here on earth, but not so good when we leave this earth. We are just passing through here. Building on these things is like building your house on sand.
I encourage you today to think about how solid the foundation is upon which you are building for eternity. All the things of this earth are passing away. It won’t matter what we have collected here we can’t take it with us. It won’t matter who we impressed while we were here on earth.
There are only two choices for our eternal home, heaven or hell. How we live our lives here will determine our final destination. Now is the time to be sure that we have a good, solid foundation. Now is the time to enter into a close, personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
In Psalm 18:2, David said, “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
Jesus is our rock. He is our fortress or our protection in times of trouble and he redeems us from our sin. Build your foundation on Him. As the old hymn says, “on Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.”
Trust in Jesus and make Him your solid foundation today.
Have a great day!
