And the king’s servants said to the king, “We are your servants, ready to do whatever my lord, the king commands.”  2 Samuel 15:15 NKJV

Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on this verse said that believers should be able to say the same thing to our Lord. So, I thought it would be a good idea to ask ourselves if we could say that to God today. Can you?

I will admit that doing what God commands is sometimes the hardest things I have to do. God commands us to do things that go against what our flesh wants.

This is why Paul tells us in Galatians 5:16-17 that we must walk in the Spirit so that we will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh. These things are contrary to one another.

Jesus told us to love our enemies, bless those who curse us, do good to those who hate us, and pray for those who spitefully use us in Matthew 5:44. That goes against what we want to do. If we are totally honest, we want to despise our enemies and curse them and get vengeance. Oh, and that’s another thing. Deuteronomy 32:35 tells us that we are not to seek revenge because vengeance belongs to the Lord and He will repay. Paul reiterated this in Romans 12:19.

And another thing that I have trouble with is being still. Psalm 46:10 says that we should be still and know that He is God. Some versions say stop your fighting. Sometimes we get so busy taking matters into our own hands that we forget who is in charge. We forget to just stop and give it over to the only One who has power to fix it.

As Christians, obeying God’s commands are not optional. We can’t pick and choose which commands we will obey. When we surrender our lives to Him, we must be willing to obey all of His commands and be willing to do what He wants us to do and to go where He wants us to go. Often that will take us out of our comfort zone. It may even cause a little anxiety. But you must remember this, God will not bring us anywhere that He can’t keep us. He will not ask us to do anything that He does not equip us to do. If we are going to be His soldiers, He will give us the battle gear we need. God’s armor is listed for us in Ephesians 6:10-18.

If you have been dabbling in religion and are finding that merely dabbling is not enough. Lean on Him. Trust in Him. Study His word and pray continually. He doesn’t audibly speak to us, but He guides us through His word. So, a big part of obeying His commands is knowing what they are. We have to study our Bibles.

Proverbs 3:5-6 tells to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding, but in all our ways acknowledge Him and He will guide us on the right paths. Don’t trust your own thoughts. You will also have well-meaning friends and family members that may try to lead you along the wrong path. Put your trust in God.

Surrender to Him. Now, maybe you have surrendered but you find yourself struggling with His commands. Or, maybe you find yourself a bit uncomfortable with what He’s calling you to do.

Trust in Him. When we put our trust in Him, He can help to ease our fears. If He has called us to do something, you better believe, He will help us do it. Philippians 4:13 says we can do all things through Him who gives us strength. He will strengthen us to do whatever He calls us to do.

I leave you with this today, can you honestly say to God, “I am your servant, ready to do whatever my Lord the King commands?”

I hope so. If you are having difficulty with this trust in Him, lean on Him and He will help you. You will even find peace and joy in serving Him. So, give it a try, you will be glad you did.
