A Good Night’s Sleep

I will both lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, LORD, make me live in safety.     Psalm 4:8 HCSB

Insomnia is sometimes referred to as sleeplessness. Unfortunately, I go through bouts of it. Last week, I went about 5 nights in a row falling asleep but waking up after just 2-4 hours. If you have ever suffered with insomnia, you know it can cause a whole host of problems including stress, depression, the inability to think clearly and react quickly.

While some say that at any given time 10-20% of the population is suffering with insomnia, I believe that this number is much higher as I am sure many cases go unreported.

I am blessed to have a good doctor that can pinpoint the cause and get me back on track. Insomnia can be caused by a number of things, there are health issues that can cause insomnia. There are doctors that do sleep studies. Sleep Apnea not only puts one in danger of the side effects of insomnia but can be deadly if left untreated.

I have often heard it said, if you can’t sleep, try reading in the book of Psalms.

Last night, I had one of those sleepless nights. I was exhausted from not sleeping well the night before and waking too early. After being asleep only three hours, I woke up and couldn’t go to sleep. I got up and went into another room and began reading Psalms. When I got to Psalm 4, I read our Scripture passage for today.

I was exhausted when I got up, but I couldn’t sleep. As I sat there reading, I was growing tired. When I got to that verse, I thought to myself. “I will lie down in peace and sleep because I know the LORD makes me live in safety”

Sometimes I can’t sleep because I am worrying about things I have no control over. There are times when I am stressed out and don’t even realize it. I have actually gone to my doctor and been diagnosed as having a great deal of stress and I couldn’t tell.

We live in such a busy world with everything moving so quickly. We rush through our days and sometimes don’t even realize our minds are bothered until we try to get to sleep or stay asleep.

If you are having a problem with regularly getting a good night’s sleep, let me say you should go to a doctor and let them diagnose the issue. Try to get to the root of the problem rather than just having them give you a medication for a sleep aid.

If you suffer, however, from anxiety or stress know that God’s got you. Know that God is our protector. We are told this in another Psalm, Psalm 91.

I don’t know if we will sleep in heaven, I haven’t read anything that indicates we will. If we don’t, then I know it’s because we won’t need sleep. I have no doubt that either way we will always feel as refreshed as if we had had a good night’s sleep.

If you are suffering with not getting a good night’s sleep read the Psalms. Remember that God is our protector. No matter what we may have facing us, we can lie down and sleep in peace, knowing God’s got us. He’s bigger than any problem we will ever face. He will take good care of us.

Put your faith in Him, trust in Him with all your heart (Proverbs 3:5-6). He will take good care of you.

Have a great day!
