And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
2 Corinthians 10:9-10 NKJV
Paul suffered from some type of infirmity. The Bible doesn’t really say what it was. Some thought it may have been a problem with his vision. But Paul mentioned in verse 8 that he had pleaded with God three times to remove this from him and our Scripture passage gives us God’s response.
One thing we can rest assured of is in this life we will suffer. We will suffer having to deal with evil people. We will suffer infirmities and weaknesses. And there will be times there is simply nothing we can do about it. So, what do you do when there is nothing you can do? Well, I’m glad you asked because this is when it is most important to remember that there is nothing God CAN’T do.
Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” We serve a God who can do all things. Paul said in Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. You can believe if God bring you to hard times, He can bring you through them. He will supply the strength you need to do what He has called you to do. He will give you the strength you need to endure and come through whatever He brings your way.
The key is remaining in Him. Jesus said in John 15:5, “I am the vine, and you are the branches. He who abides in Me and I in him bears much fruit; for without me you can do nothing.”
It’s often disappointing and frustrating to feel as though there is nothing we can do, but we must understand while we are helpless is when God does His best work. He really doesn’t need our help. What we can do is cry out to Him and pray. Yes, He already knows what we need, but we need to pray to Him and trust in Him to help in whatever situation we may find ourselves.
God uses times of difficulties to mature us as Christians. We are told in James 2:1-4 to be joyful in trials knowing that God is testing our faith. This testing of our faith produces patience. When we come through these trials patiently trusting in God and His work, we mature as Christians. Verse four says this is done so we may be perfect and complete lacking in nothing.
We have to grow as Christians, and we grow by faith. When we find ourselves in times where we have no control over a situation and have to lay it at Jesus’ feet we have to rely on our faith.
When there is nothing, you can do, remember there is nothing God can’t do. Trust in Him. Give it over to Him and trust that He will work it out. If you do your part, you can trust that He will do His part. We are told in Romans 8:28 that we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose. This means that we need to love the Lord with all our heart, do what He has called us to do, and trust in Him to do what we can’t do.
So, take a page from Paul’s playbook. Take pleasure in your infirmities, reproaches, needs, persecutions and distresses you suffer for Christ’s sake knowing He’s got this.
Have a great day!
