What’s The Big Deal?

Jesus said to him, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.    Matthew 22:37-39 NKJV

I want you to take a minute to think about what things are most important to you. What are some of the things that you make time for each day? What are some of the things you do weekly without fail? What are some things you feel really disappointed about if you are unable to do them?

We all have our routines. The first thing I try to do in the morning is spend time in prayer and Bible study. And I try without fail to attend church services on Sunday and Wednesday. Of course, I also like to get a cup of coffee first thing in the morning. I like to walk with my friend or my cousin. I like to spend time with my granddaughter and my nieces and nephews. I enjoy Sunday lunch with my family. These are all things that are big deals for me.

Of course, we all have obligations like jobs and raising children and keeping up our homes and property. These are big deals in our lives.

Id’ like to spend the next few days talking about some things that should be a really big deal for Christians.

Our Scripture passage tells us what should be first on our mind and our hearts. This is our love for Christ. Jesus tells us we must love the Lord our God with all our heart, all our soul, and all our minds. Do you do this? Do you carve time out of your busy day for Him every day without fail? Do you set aside a time each week to go into His house and praise Him and worship Him? Do you serve Him?

We all have things going on in our lives that are a big deal. We may have a job that takes a lot of our time. We may be raising children or helping with grandchildren. We may be struggling to keep up with our chores at home. Whatever we are doing I can promise you none of it is as important as loving the Lord with all you’ve got. We should be seeking Him with all our hearts.

The big deal about this is it effects how you will spend your eternity. It determines whether you will be cast into a lake of fire (Revelation 21:7) or spend eternity in heaven with God the Father. And believe me that’s a big deal. Eternity is forever, let that sink in for a minute.

We are told in Matthew 6:33 to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you. In other words, if we are seeking the Lord and doing our best to live as He has commanded us to live, we have nothing to worry about. God will provide all we need. He will take care of the rest.

I pray as you go into this week, you will pay close attention to what Jesus has commanded us to do. I pray that you will spend time each day in conversation with your Lord and Savior through Bible study and prayer.

How we live on earth is a really big deal because it determines our final destination. While we serve a God of mercy, we only have this short time to get it right. If your relationship with Jesus hasn’t been a big deal to you, you might want to rethink that.

Have a great day!
