Signed, Sealed, Delivered

We have also received an inheritance in Him, predestined according to the purpose of the One who works out everything in agreement with the decision of His will, so that we who had already put our hope in the Messiah might bring praise to His glory. When you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed in Him, you were also sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. He is the down payment of our inheritance for the redemption of the possession, to the praise of His glory.     Ephesians 1:11-13 HCSB

Our courts are full of people fighting for an inheritance. Some people believe they were left out of the will unjustly; some are striving to keep what was promised to them. In most cases, these people are willing to do whatever it takes to get what they believe is owed to them.

I’ve never felt that inheritance is something owed to someone, but rather it is a gift freely given in love. My parents gave me all they could to help me to succeed in life. They worked hard and taught us to do the same.

God doesn’t owe us an inheritance but because of His great love for us, He paid the ultimate price to secure our inheritance. Jesus Christ shed His blood on the cross so that we might receive our inheritance through Him. Warren Wiersbe points out that we not only receive an inheritance, but we are an inheritance paid with a heavy price. He explains that while Jesus Christ is the Father’s gift to us, we are the Father’s gift to His Son.

Often in these court battles where there is a will involved, the one challenging the will may say it was not signed while the person was in their right mind or it is a forgery. Christ death signed God’s will to us.

It was also marked with a seal. In verse 13 it says we were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the seal that we are God’s child. If you have ever needed a certified copy of any civil or legal document, you know that the seal is what certifies its authenticity. A seal marks us as his. It’s not what we say or do or what good works we do, it’s the Spirit living inside of us that makes us a genuine believer.

A seal also implies ownership. We are His possession purchased by Christ’s blood shed on the cross. Warren Wiersbe explains that the believer belongs to God and is safe and protected because he is part of a finished transaction.

In John 14:16-17 Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit will be a counselor who will be with us forever. He tells us that He is the Spirit of Truth who will remain with us and in us.

Have you been signed, sealed, and delivered? You have been offered a precious inheritance worth more than all the money and gold in the world. All you have to do is accept it. Deliver or surrender yourself to the Lord.

It doesn’t mean that you will live the rest of your days without a worry or a care. It simply means that you have been adopted into God’s family. You are His child and you have inherited the kingdom of God.

And that means that even on your worst days, He is working all things out for your good and His glory (Romans 8:28). If you haven’t accepted your inheritance, I strongly encourage you not to delay in doing so for we never know when it will be too late. Surrender your life to Him. Trust in Him to take good care of you. Obey Him and keep His commands. You won’t be sorry.

God signed the will with the blood of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit sealed it. Now all you have to do is accept delivery. Will you do that today?

Have a great day!
