Moving Mountains

So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea, ‘ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.
Mark 11:22-23 NKJV

The day before Jesus had gone to a fig tree in hopes of finding figs. Unfortunately, it was not the season for figs and he only found leaves. In response to not finding any figs on the tree, Jesus cursed the tree by saying, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.” This was in Mark 11:12-14. The next day they passed the fig tree to find that it had withered, and Jesus responded with our passage for today.

It sounds kind of cruel to kill the tree simply because it wasn’t producing figs when it was not the season for figs, but Jesus was using it to make a point. The point was that we must bear fruit. What does this mean? Well, it means that we are not to just warm a pew on Sunday morning, we are to actively serve Him and others.

Jesus did not put us here on earth to satisfy our own desires, but to be in close fellowship with Him. He put us here to be His disciples and win others to Christ. It’s important to understand this when we read all the verses in the Bible about moving mountains. In John 15:1-6 Jesus refers to Himself as the vine and us as the branches. He said that whoever remains in Him can bear much fruit.

Then in John 15:16 Jesus said, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.”

When we surrender our lives to Christ and “bear fruit”. Our will aligns with God’s will. We want above all things for God’s will to be done. So, this doesn’t mean that we can pray for fortune or fame and God will give it to us. It means that we pray for God’s will to be done and we put His will above our own.

The analogy of moving a mountain is used several times by Jesus. We all know that moving a mountain is an impossible task. Jesus is pointing out that He can do the impossible. In Matthew 19:26, Mark 10:27, and Luke 1:37 Jesus said that with God nothing was impossible.

As Christians, we will face times when it seems as we are hoping for what is impossible or we are trying to do what is impossible. We must remember, however, that with God nothing is impossible. I was listening to a podcast the other day and they were discussing faith and the speaker said, “Let’s move some mountains.” This should be that attitude of every Christian.

My friend, Jesus wants us to have the kind of faith that moves mountains. He says that numerous times. All we have to do is trust in Him and believe that with Him nothing is impossible. It’s so easy to let the “what ifs” creep in and scare us. It’s so easy to lose hope and feel that all is lost, but we must remember that with God nothing is impossible.

So, when the going gets tough think about moving that mountain. When that mountain stands in your way and it’s impossible to get around it or over it, remember that God can move it. You just have to believe. You do your part by believing and God will do His part by moving the mountain.

Have a great day!
