Lord Help Me

Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made the heaven and the earth.     Psalm 124:8 NKJV

I don’t know about you, but I have come to realize that while I am quick to ask God to help others. I sometimes fail to ask God to help me. If I get into a bind, I will ask God for help. I sometimes, however, fail to ask for His help in the simple day-to-day things. As I pondered the question of why I didn’t always ask God for his help in whatever I faced, I came to realize that pride was an issue. Ouch!

We are told in Proverbs 3:5-6 that we should trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding. We should acknowledge Him in all our ways, and He will guide us on the right paths.

This is why we are told in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 to “Rejoice always! Pray constantly. Give thanks in everything, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Prayer shouldn’t just be something we do a few times a day; it should be something we do throughout the day. We should acknowledge God in all we do. We should be in constant contact with Him through daily Bible study and continual prayer.

And most importantly, we should ask for His help in all circumstances. He loves us more than we can comprehend. He is where our help comes from. He is there for us. He will fight our battles for us.

So many times, I have tried to handle things on my own and only ended up making a mess of it. I can’t help but think things would have gone a lot smoother if I had consulted God in the beginning. If I had only acknowledged Him before plunging forward with what I wanted to do. If I had only asked for help as soon as the ship started to sink instead of waiting for the whole thing to go down.

I also used to think some problems were too small for me to bother God with them. I have learned that those small problems can become really big problems if we don’t give them over to Him.

We have an intercessor in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We serve a God who loves us more than we will ever know. He is a good, good Father, and He wants us to come to Him for help in times of trouble.

And of course, I go back to my favorite Psalm, Psalm 91. The first two verses of this Psalm speak of God’s help in times of trouble. Verse one tells us that for those who choose to live under the protection of the Most High, they will live under the shadow of the Almighty. We can be safely tucked in under God’s shadow if we choose to make Him our dwelling place. And verse two tells us we can say to the Lord, “My refuge, my fortress, my God in whom I trust.”

God loves you, and He wants to be your refuge. He wants to be your rock. He wants us to turn to Him in times of trouble. He wants to help us, but He will only do so if we ask.

We need God all day, every day. The sooner we accept this, the easier life will be. He tells us in His word that we will have trouble. But He also tells us He’s there to help. He tells us He will walk with us through the fire and the flood in Isaiah 43:2. He tells us in Psalm 46:10 we simply need to be still and know that He is God.

Turn to Him today. Stay in constant contact with Him through prayer and Bible study. Acknowledge Him in all you do. Cast your cares on Him because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). Do not fear, God’s got you.

Have a great day!
