If You Are Really Smart…

Claiming to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles.
Therefore, God delivered them over in the cravings of their hearts to sexual impurity, so that their bodies were degraded among themselves.
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served something created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen.     Romans 1:22-25 HCSB

If you have ever spent time with a non-believer, one of the first things you may notice is how smart they think they are. Often, non-believers believe they are the smartest person in the room. I don’t spend much time with non-believers because, in all honesty, they bring me down. I find myself feeling sad for them because not only do they lack God-given wisdom, but they also lack peace and joy in their lives. They often live their lives in chaos and blame everyone but themselves for it. And what’s most interesting is when you try to help them by trying to share with them what Christ has done for you, they think you are the crazy one.

While I still find this situation sad for anyone who is caught up in it, at least it is explained to us in the Bible. If you read our Scripture passage, this explains why so many people who claim to be so wise reject the Lord. If you read verse 21 in Romans 1, it says, “For though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became nonsense, and their senseless minds were darkened.”  I

I encourage you to determine your level of intelligence. I don’t mean by taking an I.Q. test, I mean by considering a few things. This will determine if you have God-given wisdom or if you simply think you are really smart. First, do you believe in Jesus? Do you believe that His blood shed on the cross can wash your sins away? Have you accepted Him as your Savior? Have you confessed your sins to Him, repented, and surrendered your life to Him?

If you don’t believe, these things may seem like nonsense to you. I also understand how the rational mind may have a hard time comprehending things like God’s eternality, His Holy Trinity, the virgin birth, and eternal life either in heaven or in hell. If you consider yourself to be really intelligent, you may have a hard time comprehending these things.

I encourage you, however, to consider a few things. What if you are wrong? What if heaven and hell really do exist? What if there is a God and a devil, and the two are competing for your soul? And most importantly, what if you die without accepting Christ as your Savior and glorifying Him as God and showing Him gratitude?

If you really want to be wise, ask God. We are told in James 1:5 that if any of us lack wisdom, we should ask God. God generously gives wisdom. He also will not criticize us for asking, but will graciously give us wisdom. We can also pray for discernment so we can tell the truth from the lies.

I hate to bust your bubble, but no matter how smart you think you are, if you reject the living God, you are a fool. The Bible says so. It says this in our Scripture passage for today. Psalm 14:1-2 says, “The fool says in his heart, ‘God does not exist.” They are corrupt; they do vile deeds. There is no one who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven on the human race to see if there is one who is wise, one who seeks God.”

Without God, we are fools. This is not me, the Bible says this. If you want to be wise, you must start by seeking God. You must believe in Him. You must receive Him into your heart. And I also strongly suggest that you daily pray to Him for wisdom and discernment. He will gladly give it to you.

Our Scripture passage tells us there will come a time when He gives us over to our evil, fleshly desires. Once we reject Him enough, it will be too late. Don’t be a fool. Come to God before it’s too late.

Have a great day!
