Give What You’ve Got

So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain so nothing is lost.” Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.   John 6:12-13 NKJV

This Scripture passage speaks of Jesus feeding 5,000 with just two fish and five small loaves of bread. There are a few things we need to consider here. First as we read the entire passage found in John 6:1-15 it says there were 5,000 men. This does not include women and children. It is possible that there were around 20,000 people all together. Jesus gave thanks for the small amount of food, blessed it, and fed all these people with one boy’s lunch.

Our Scripture passage shows us that not only was it enough to fill each person, but they had 12 baskets left over.

The only way this can happen is supernaturally. We are told in the beginning that Jesus asked how they would feed all these people to His disciples to test them. Philip answered that 8 months wages wouldn’t be enough to feed all these people. Andrew pointed out that this boy had his lunch and was willing to share but so little would not help with so many people.

These are disciples that had been with Jesus. They had witnessed him healing the sick and even rising the dead, but they couldn’t see a solution to this problem. Don’t we often do the same thing?

Jesus knew what He was going to do. He was going to multiply this food so that it would be more than enough.

There are times when Jesus calls us to do what seems impossible. He calls us out of our comfort zone and calls upon us to do things that we don’t think we have in us. It’s not about how much we have, it’s about what He can do with what we have.

We have to be willing to give it. That boy was willing to share his lunch with the crowd of thousands of people. In doing so, not only did he get to eat, but everyone ate until they were full. And there were 12 baskets left over. He may have brought more food home than he brought there.

Jesus gave this to the disciples to distribute. He also gives us gifts to distribute and do His work and spread the gospel. He is the manufacturer and we are the distributor. He doesn’t ask us to make anything only that we be willing to distribute what He has provided.

This miracle could have only been done by Jesus, and we know He is the bread of life. In John 6:27, Jesus said, “Do not labor for food which perishes, but for the food that endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”

Often times we get so busy trying to feed ourselves not only with food but with knowledge in this ever-changing world. We must remember, however, what is important never changes. We must focus on Jesus who is our bread of life. He is our food that never perishes and He will nourish us spiritually and grow us into mature Christians headed for the eternal life lived with Him in heaven. Daily feed yourself with His Holy Word. Trust in Him to work in you.

If God is calling you to do something, don’t focus on what you don’t have just give Him what you do have. You will be amazed at what He can do with it. And you will find that through Him you will have more than enough.

Have a great day!
