You’ve Got One Job!

Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
Jesus said to him, ” ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’

Matthew 22:37 NKJV

Some of you may have read the title and thought, “I wish!” We seem to wear so many hats these days that it seems as though we have many jobs. Many struggle with working full time, taking care of a home and children, and some are caretakers for elderly or disabled. Some are trying to work several jobs just to make ends meet. Some are working many jobs within their church or volunteering for several organizations. But, in our walk with God we have one job. Allow me to explain.

In his devotion for today,  Dr. Charles Stanley said that the most important thing we have to do is be assured of our eternal destiny (1 John). So, this is what I mean when I say you have one job. There may be many tasks to perform here on earth, but what it all boils down to is one really important job. We are told in Matthew 6:33 that we should first seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all other things will be added to us. Our job is to love the Lord with all our heart, all our soul, and all our mind. This means that God is number one in our lives. We put Him first above all other people, things, or duties. When we do this, He helps everything else fall into place.

When we don’t put God first in our lives, our lives are going to be unbalanced. Things are going to be hectic and there will be chaos and turmoil. I know because I’ve been there, done that and got the t-shirt. I don’t ever want to go back to living that way, because to be honest with you, it was just way too stressful. I spent most of my time trying to figure out how I was going to handle all these issues coming my way and I plugged God in where I could find a space and a little time for Him. Problems were popping up like Whack-A-Moles faster than I could knock them down. But once I wised up and just put Him first and focused on Him, He took care of everything else. I finally had time to breathe. I had peace and joy in my life.

Once I loved the Lord with all my heart, and all my soul, and all my mind, He helped me fall right into step in my walk with Him. He made it easier for me to love others (Matthew 22:39). He made it easier for me to love my enemies and pray for those who persecute me (Matthew 5:44). My love and devotion to Him makes me want to obey His commands (John 14:15).  I know that when I focus on Him, I have no need to fear because He protects me from whatever comes my way (Psalm 91). I know that He will supply all that I need (Philippians 4:19). I know that when I become weary, I can yoke up to Him and He will help to lighten my load (Matthew 11:28).

God put us here to love Him with all our heart, our soul, and our mind. We were put here to focus on Him. When we do what we are supposed to do, He works all things out for our good (Romans 8:28). He takes good care of us (Jeremiah 29:11).

So, if you are running around like a chicken with your head cut off doing everything but your one job, stop. Focus on Him. Trust in Him. Love Him with all you’ve got. He gave his life for you, are you willing to give yours over to Him? I can tell you, it will be the best decision you ever made.

The peace and joy that comes from a life of loving the Lord and being obedient to Him is better than I ever imagined. And the best part is that it’s only gonna get better from here because I know my final destination. I pray that you can say the same.

My friend, as human beings, we have one job to do. Do it well.

Have a great day!
