Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout in triumph, Daughter Jerusalem! Look, your King is coming to you; He is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, on the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9 HCSB
This prophecy of Zechariah’s was fulfilled when Jesus rode into Jerusalem. He was going to Jerusalem to be crucified for the sins of people like you and me.
Many people, specifically the Jews, had thought Jesus would be a political king who would come and save them from Roman oppression. They expected Him to be a conquering king who would restore their kingdom and restore political power to the Jews.
When he entered Jerusalem, he was given a hero’s welcome, but things soon went south. The problem was they had misplaced expectations of why Jesus had come.
Jesus was born to save us from our sins. He came to conquer sin and death. They had hoped for a conquering king to conquer the Roman empire and restore the Jewish empire.
Sadly, today we tend to put our hope in political figures. We look for someone to turn things around.
I often wonder if people put as much time and effort into worshipping and praising the Lord as they did promoting some politicians and complaining about others, how different this world would be. What if we all held our political leaders accountable to Biblical standards?
Truth be told, we probably wouldn’t have any political leaders if that were the case. We see the prophecy of Isaiah 5:20 being fulfilled where evil is called good and good is called evil. We live in a world that is filled with confusion about things that should not be confusing at all.
Jesus rode into Jerusalem humbly on that colt and fulfilled Zechariah’s prophecy. Jesus knew He was riding into Jerusalem to be crucified. He knew that many didn’t understand who He was or why He had come.
We must understand that He did this to save you and me from an eternity in a fiery hell. It’s important to understand our King is coming.
Are you ready? Are you placing your hope on some political candidate to make our nation great? Or are you focused on the kingdom where we will spend eternity?
Our King is coming some sweet day. We are told in Revelation 3:10, “Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world to try those who dwell on the earth.”
1 Thessalonians 4:17 says, “Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.”
Are you focused on this temporary dwelling place where we are today? Or are you focused on the eternal kingdom?
Jesus died on that cross and rose from the grave so that we might have forgiveness for our sins. He paid the price, so we no longer have to live in bondage to sin and death. He is returning for those who patiently endure, trust in Him, and obey His commands.
Your King is coming some sweet day. He won’t be a politician or an evangelist. He will come with the mighty sound of a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God (1 Thessalonians 4:16).
Revelation 1:7 tells us, “Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced him, and all the tribes of the earth will wait on account of Him. Even so. Amen.”
When Jesus comes back for us, there will be no mistaking that it’s our Lord and Savior. We will know that our King has come for us. Just be sure you’re ready because by that time if you are not, it will be too late.
Have a great day!
