Why Don’t We Listen?

Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord’ and don’t do the things I say? I will show you what someone is like who comes to Me, hears My words, and acts on them. He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the river crashed against the house and couldn’t shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The river crashed against it and immediately it collapsed. And the destruction of that house was great!”  Luke 6:46-49 HCSB

Here Jesus tries to dummy it down so that we all can understand. It’s quite simple, actually. When we listen to God and obey His commands, we are like the house on the rock. We have a good, solid foundation and we can withstand the storm. It’s kind of like the three little pigs’ houses. Remember how when they made the house of straw and the house of twigs, the wolf was able to blow those houses down. But, the wolf could not blow the house made of bricks and mortar down.

Now you can hear God’s word and ignore it, the choice is yours. But if you do this, then you are like the house with no foundation. Things may go well for you for a while, but there is coming a day my friend when you will find that the destruction will be great.

It seems like a simple choice. I want to be able to withstand the storm. I want to be strong when the going gets tough. I want to know that I can persevere. So, if I want these things, then I should just listen to God and do what He says, right? But, I will admit there are still times that I just don’t listen. I am trying to get better with that.

So, where are you in your walk with Christ right now? Are you warming a church pew every Sunday, but not really taking God’s words to heart? Are you listening, but the words just aren’t sinking in? My friend if this is the case, you are in a precarious position. Know that destruction is headed your way. Oh things may go well for you here on planet earth and you may wonder what in the world I am talking about, but the day will come when you will find yourself answering to God and may find that it doesn’t go so well. God has commanded us to love Him with our whole heart, our soul, and our mind. He wants us to give Him all we’ve got. He also has commanded us to love others as we love ourselves.  So, I ask you are you calling Him, ‘Lord, Lord’, but not really listening and doing what He tells us to do?

If you are reading this, then it’s not too late. You can turn to God. You can ask Him to strengthen you and help you to do better. You can ask Him to make you the person that He needs for you to be. Give it all over to Him and be like the house built on the rock, able to withstand whatever comes your way.

Have a great day!
