Why Church Isn’t Popular

For the time will come when they will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear something new. They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths.
2 Timothy 1:3-4 HCSB

Do you go to a church that is filled to capacity most Sundays? I know ours isn’t. Our pastor preaches the truth from the Bible, and I guess that’s not as popular as coffee bars and smoke machines.

Our pastor preaches the truth from the Bible and just as our Scripture passage says, I think a lot of people don’t want to hear that these days. They want to hear that whatever they do is okay. They want to think they can sin, and God will be okay with it. He will get on board with their plans and bless their transgressions. I know this because I used to think this way.

If you look at some of these false teachers with their false churches, you will see they are very popular. They have churches that hold thousands of people, and they fill them up on Sunday mornings. If you look at their doctrine, you will see that it does not line up with Scripture. It is false doctrine. And just as our Scripture passage says, it will become popular because it is what people want to hear. People want to hear that our sin is okay. People want to hear that it’s all good. People want to hear that God is so merciful He would never punish us for our sins. These are all lies. These lies are leading people to hell.

If you neglect to go to church because you don’t like what the preacher has to say, you need to ask yourself what’s wrong with what he is saying. Is pointing out your sin and making you uncomfortable? Well, it may not seem like a good thing, but actually you should be grateful. If you have a pastor that preaches the truth from God’s word, you should appreciate him. You should support him and his ministry.

We live in an age where we would rather be coddled and told that we should just follow our hearts and do as we please. This is a lie straight from the devil used to entice us into hell to spend eternity with him.

If you want to spend eternity in heaven with God the Father, seek Him with all your heart. Trust in Him. Confess your sins to Him and repent and He will cleanse you of all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

There was a time in my life when church wasn’t my favorite thing to do on a Sunday morning, but now it’s the only thing I do. I need to be with other believers praising and worshiping Him. I need my little midweek recharge on Wednesdays. I need to hear the truth. I spent too many years believing the devil’s lies, and this kept me in the bondage of sin. But praise God the truth has set me free.

Another lie we like to tell ourselves is that we don’t need church. However, we are told in Hebrews 10:25 not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but encouraging one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

Find a good Bible teaching church where the truth is preached from God’s word. Attend regularly and get involved. You will be so glad you did. When you do this, you may become surprised at what a popular part of your life church will become.

Have a great day!
