Who do you think you are?

So what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.  The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.  Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when He appears we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is.  1 John 3:1-2  ESV

There is a website titled, Esteemed Self.  According to a report on this website, self esteem has a huge impact on how we live our lives.  According to the report, healthy self- esteem correlates with rationality, realism, intuitiveness, creativity, flexibility, independence and the ability to manage change.  Whereas, poor self- esteem correlates with irrationality, blindness to reality, rigidity, fear of the new and unfamiliar, inappropriate conformity or inappropriate rebelliousness, defensiveness, overly compliant or controlling behavior and fear of or hostility toward others.

I’ve known people who are very insecure in who they are.  I’m sure you have also.  They are the ones that are most likely to throw their weight around when placed in a position of authority.  They will use that position to mistreat others.  They are the ones that are most likely to cheat on their spouse.  They crave approval from as many sources as possible which make them easy targets.  They are more likely to put down on others in an attempt to raise themselves up.  It’s not pretty.

So I ask you, who do you think you are?  Do you realize that you are a child of God?  Do you realize that you are a child of the King of Kings?  Or do you think you are a nothing, a nobody?  Do you think that you are not important or valuable?  Well, that’s not what the Bible teaches.

There are many verses in the Bible that tells us that God hates pride and loves humility.  But there is a difference between humility and low self-esteem.  Humility shows appreciation for what we have and what is done for us.  Low self-esteem shows that we do not feel that we measure up.  The Bible tells us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made in Psalm 139:14.  God doesn’t make  junk, he makes masterpieces.  Danny Gokey has a wonderful song out on this subject titled, Masterpiece.  The Bible tells us in Ephesians 2:10 that we are His workmanship created for good works and that we should walk in them.  We are told in 1 Corinthians 3:16 that we are God’s temple and His spirit dwells in us.  Romans 8:37 tells us that we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

It is important that we believe in the God who made us and we believe in His creation.  That’s what we are, His creation.  It’s important to remember who your Father is.  It’s important to understand where you came from.  Whether you came from the ghetto or the mansion, you are a prince or a princess.  You need to understand this.  Also understand that we are works in progress.

God doesn’t want us to walk around all puffed up in pride, but He also doesn’t want us to be ashamed of who we are in Christ.  We are made to serve Him.  That’s hard to do when we are suffering from low self-esteem.  So think about who you think you are.  It really matters.

We are God’s children.  We have direct access to Him.  If you are suffering from depression or low self-esteem, call out to Him.  Study His word and read about who you really are and how wonderfully you were made.   Accept your position in the family of believers and stay close to your Father.  Don’t be afraid to turn to a pastor or Christian friend for help.

God paid a high price to ransom us from sin and death.  I hope you appreciate the suffering of Jesus Christ to free you from bondage.  I hope that you appreciate the blood that was shed for your ransom.  If God loved you enough to send his one and only Son to earth to be tortured, humiliated and killed for you (John 3:16), then doesn’t that show you how much he truly loves you.

Don’t ever forget that and please don’t take it for granted.

Have a great day!
