Then the Lord said, “I have observed the misery of My people in Egypt, and have heard them crying out because of their oppressors, and I know about their sufferings. I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and to bring them from that land to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey-the territory of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. The Israelites’ cry for help has come to Me, and I have also seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. Therefore, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh so that you may lead My people, the Israelites, out of Egypt”
But Moses asked God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should bring the Israelites out of Egypt.” Exodus 3:7-11 HCSB
Let me give you a little back story here. This is the story of Moses and the burning bush. You see when Moses had been born, the Pharaoh had issued an order that all Israelite males born were to be killed at birth. In an attempt to save Moses, his mother put him in the river in a basket. He was found there by the Pharaoh’s daughter and she paid his mom to nurse him and from the time he was weaned, he was raised in the palace as the Pharaoh’s daughter. Talk about divine intervention, right? He was raised as Egyptian royalty, but was Hebrew. When he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew or Israelite slave, he became angry and killed the Egyptian. He thought that it was his little secret, but found out the next day that some people knew about it and had told the Pharaoh who vowed to kill him. So Moses fled. He met and married a woman and began raising sheep with his father-in-law. However, he was sad about the oppression of his people back in Egypt. So, he had cried out to God to save them. In our scripture passage today, God has plans to save the Israelites and bring them out of Egypt. The only problem is He has chosen Moses to do it. Oops. Doesn’t sound like this is what Moses had in mind.
You see Moses wanted God to fix things, he just didn’t want to really be a part of the solution. He was kind of hoping God would just rush in there and settle things, but God had other plans. God wanted to use Moses to accomplish His plans. Moses didn’t feel that he was up for this task. You see he had settled into a nice quiet life of sheep herding with his wife and father-in-law. All was well and he saw no need to change things at this time. But God is now telling him to go back to a land where the Pharaoh has vowed to kill him and confront the Pharaoh and bring His people, the Pharaoh’s slave labor force out of the land. What? So of course, Moses responds, “Who am I to do this?” He goes on to give God several excuses. One being that he is not a good speaker. God has an answer for every excuse. God finally tells him that He will send his brother Aaron with him so that he can speak for him. Does any of this sound familiar?
You see often times God calls us out of our comfort zone in order to use us. He wants us to do things that we never thought that we could do. But with God’s help we can do anything. Philippians 4:13 tells us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. I can assure you of one thing, if God calls you to do something, he equips you to do what he calls you to do. There have been several occasions where God has called me out of my comfort zone to do jobs for Him that I never thought I could do. The most beautiful part of if was the blessing that I received from doing what God had called me to do.
Now as you know, the story of Moses doesn’t end with him leading the Israelites out of Egypt. Moses spent years in the desert with them grumbling and complaining. He spent years trying to keep them straight. God had not called Moses to do one simple little task and then allowed him to go back to his sheep. No, He had called him to spend the rest of his life leading this often times ungrateful and unruly bunch of people.
Sometimes God calls us to do a simple task. Sometimes God call us to change our entire lives. Whatever He is calling you to do, let me assure you that once you submit to His will, you will be so glad you did. God knows what is best for us. His timing is perfect. Trust in Him today. Submit to Him and His calling on your life. Whether he is calling you to give up your only day to sleep in to go to church or calling you to lead a group of whining, ungrateful people, know that He’s right there with you. He’s got your back and He will bless you for your obedience. So, don’t delay any longer. If you do, God just might give up on you and find someone else to bless.
Have a great day!
