Where’s the Sign?!

So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe.”  John 4:48  ESV

Jesus performed many signs and wonders during His ministry.  In this scripture passage He is telling a man who is asking Him to heal his son.  Some people are skeptical or unbelieving,  they are hoping for signs to help them believe.  I am happy to say that I have seen many signs and wonders in my day, but I have always believed.  God wants us to trust in Him and believe. The man believed that Jesus could heal his son and Jesus did.   There are many things going on today that people indicate are signs of the end times.  Signs are a very important part of travel.  They provide us with direction and also indicate the rules of the road such as speed limit and dangers that lie ahead.  The problem that we often encounter is when a sign is supposed to be there, but is not.

Last night myself, my pastor’s wife and another friend of mine ventured out to a nearby town for a women’s conference.  We were meeting other women from our church there.  I had seen the sign for the location many times and for this reason felt that we shouldn’t have any trouble getting there. I drove to the sign.  The sign pointed to the roadway to the right and indicated that the place we were looking for was on that road.  The problem is that it wasn’t.  We went through several intersections and there were no signs to indicate where this facility was located.

Now I know in this moment some of you are reading this and saying “who pays attention to signs anymore, why not just ask Siri to guide you there”.  Well, we tried communicating with Siri, but Siri tried to send us to a location about 90 minutes away when we were only ten minutes from our destination.  We also attempted plugging the address into GPS only to have it lead us in the wrong direction.  Fortunately, we realized this and were able to ignore the GPS and finally find our way there. In the process we ran upon another sign that accurately guided us to our location.

When you are lost or looking for a particular location, it is always good to see signs that guide you to your destination.

Our world is full of lost people.  So my question today is what kind of sign are you for a lost person.  Do you guide them to Christ or lead them astray?

You see on a good day, I have no problem guiding the lost to Christ.  I am sweet and kind and loving.  But on a bad day, well, that’s another story.  Now I don’t really have a lot of bad days because most days I fully understand that I am a blood bought child of God and I have no reason to be upset or angry.  But to be totally honest, there are just days when the devil works on me.  The devil wants my sign to be obstructed from view.  Have you ever passed a speed limit sign that was covered by a big bush only to be pulled over by a police officer for speeding?  Well, the devil wants our signs that lead others to Christ to be hidden.  He is in hopes that people will see us going through difficult times and see us lashing out, gossiping, being mean spirited and unforgiving.

So have you checked your signage lately.  It is clearly seen and not obstructed from view?  Is it accurate?  Does it have follow through for turns and intersections, or does it just point in one direction and hope that the person can figure it out from there?

If you are lost, then I encourage you to look for a sign.  Look for a Christian that can confidently point you towards salvation.  If you are a Christian, then I strongly encourage you to remember that you are also a sign.  Be mindful of which direction you are pointing.  Don’t allow a bad day to cause you to point in the wrong direction.  When this happens, the lost who encounter you will only be lost even more.  Make sure that your sign points in the right direction.  Be sure that you are prepared for your signs to go the distance to bring the lost to Christ.

I pray that I will be a better sign and that I will always point others in the right direction.  If you are lost, I pray that you have a good sign that you can follow to salvation.  If you are saved, then I pray that you are pointing others to Christ.  May we all be ever mindful of where our signs are leading!

Have a great day!
