When You Can’t Go Anymore

Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. All of you, take up My yoke and learn from Me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yourselves. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.    Matthew 11:28-20 HCSB

You ever get to the point where you have to stop because you can’t go anymore? You know, like the old saying, “My got up and go just got up and went.”

We live in a fast-paced world. We work at jobs where many employers expect way more of employees than they can possibly do in any given day. We try to take care of those around us as well as ourselves. We get involved in activities we enjoy and that bring us fulfillment.

If we aren’t careful, before we know it, we have overextended ourselves and we face physical, mental and emotional exhaustion. We become run down. This can lead to a weakening in our immune system and can cause a number of health problems.

It can also cause us to be irritable and feel as though we can’t think clearly. We push on and we do all we can do forgetting about the fact that if we collapse no one will be there to do it.

We can’t take care of our loved ones, our friends, our jobs, our church jobs or anything else if we collapse from exhaustion. Jesus tells us we can come to Him if we are weary, and He will give us rest.

I can’t find one single verse in the Bible that says if you overwork yourself to the point of exhaustion you have a special place in heaven. I can’t find one that says one person should try to do everything by himself or herself.  But yet we do. Or at least, I know I do. I can’t speak for everyone.

I find myself taking on more and more and more and before you know it, I’m stressing and suffering physically.  Why do I do this? I wish I knew. The only thing I do know is that when I overdo it, I can turn to Jesus. I know He will give me rest one way or another.

I am still learning that I must learn from Him. I am still struggling to learn that His yoke is easy, and His burden is light. Jesus never intended for us to run continually like machines on the verge of breaking. We need to know our limitations.

We need to walk with Jesus each and every day. We need to spend time with Jesus each and every day. We need to trust in Him. We need to live by Proverbs 3:5-6 which tells us not to lean on our own understanding but to trust in the Lord and acknowledge Him in all we do. He will guide us on the right paths.

He will be our refuge in times of trouble, and He will give us rest. He may even encourage us to slow down and enjoy the life He has given.

If you are tired and overworked, trust in Him. Lean on Him. Come to Him when you are weary, and He will give you rest.

Have a great day!
