What’s Your Least Favorite Verse?

Wives submit to your own husbands as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, He is the Savior of the body.     Ephesians 5:22-23 HCSB

We all have a favorite verse, but most of us have one that we try to not think about so much. Perhaps it is a command that we don’t even like to obey. Our Scripture passage for today used to be my least favorite verse.

I used to read this one scripture passage and think, “Wow, I don’t know if I can do that.” I had been hurt in relationships and the whole idea of surrendering to someone who had the power to add to my emotional baggage was not appealing.

As I began to study the Bible, I realized that in this scripture passage Paul is describing the relationship between a husband and wife as God intended. He goes on to say that a woman should submit to her husband as the church submits to Christ.

He told men that they were to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Remember Christ gave His life for the church.

But what Paul is really describing here is the relationship between the church and Christ (Ephesians 5:32). He goes on to say in verse 33 that to sum it up, each one is to love his wife as much as he loves himself and the wife is to respect her husband.

God has a perfect order in the universe. Think about how the whole universe is put together. There is just enough oxygen. The earth rotates at just the right speed. The sun and the moon know when to rise and when to set.

The only thing that can mess up this perfect order is the human being. We can be the ones to mess things up. If you look around you, this is evident. This happens because we tend to disregard those verses and commandments we don’t really care for.

We don’t like words like submit or surrender. We have been taught that they indicate weakness. We forget that we have no strength except what we receive from Christ. We forget that we are not wise unless God gives us wisdom.

If you don’t particularly care for a verse or a commandment, perhaps you should study it and try to understand the reasoning for it. Whatever you do, don’t disregard it and be careful not to take it out of context.

We are told in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that all Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

While we are all works in progress, we must use the Bible as our guide for daily living. We cannot afford to pick and choose which parts we will obey while disregarding others. The verse above says “All scripture” not some Scripture.

I encourage you to not only read but study your Bible. It trains us up and makes us complete so we can do the work God calls us to do.

I have learned that my least favorite verse is one that teaches us about surrendering to Christ. It teaches us to submit to Him. I thank God for a husband that goes to church, studies the Bible, and prays with me. It’s made this whole surrendering thing easier. Sometimes I still mess up, but I’m trying.

But we are told in 1 Peter 3:1 that even if our husbands don’t obey the word, they may be won over by the conduct of their wives. In other words, they may see the peace and joy their spouse has found in Christ and want the same in their life.

If you have a verse that you are not fond of or that you tend to not worry so much about obeying, study it. Come to understand it’s meaning and why it’s important in God’s order of things. Trust in Him. Submit to Him and be obedient.

Ask God to give you wisdom and help you to be obedient. Trust that He’s got this, you just need to do your part.

Have a great day!
