What Your Social Media Says About You

“Therefore, everyone who will acknowledge Me before man, I will also acknowledge him before My father in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father in heaven.”     Matthew 10:32-33 HCSB

The term friend is used loosely these days. People we have never heard of can be our friends on social media. If this is the case, then all they know about us on our social media page. I am amused by people who post one thing on their social media and then live a totally different way.

So I am wondering what our social media friends know about us. Do you post that you are happy and all is well when truthfully you are sad and drowning in despair? Do you confess Christ on your social media, but live like the devil in “real life”. Or, do you just leave Him out altogether so there is no judgment.

Through social media we give a public persona. Be it true or false, it’s what the majority of people see. It’s what we want to broadcast to the world about ourselves. So, my question to you is what are you broadcasting?

You may be reading this from a social media page. I challenge you to stop and look at your social media. Scroll through. What does it say about you? Is it the truth? Is it filled with selfies? Is it all about you or does it show that you put God first and others above yourself (Matthew 22:37-39). Philippians 2:3 tells us to do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility to consider others as more important than yourselves. Does your social media reflect this?

My next question is, as you scroll through your social media where is Jesus? Is he there or obviously absent? If you were to die and stand before Him in judgment and He were to pull up your social media accounts, how do you think that would go for you? Would He say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”? Or would He say, “You have denied me before men so I will deny you before My Father.”?

These are things we need to be asking ourselves before it’s too late. There will come a time when either God just gives us over to our narcissism and selfish desires (Romans 1:24), we will die, or the rapture will happen. Should either of those happen right now, how would that be for you?

A week ago our pastor spoke on discipleship. Last Saturday I attended a ladies brunch at a local church where my friend also spoke on the topic. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:19) tells us that we need to “Go forth and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” It tells us that we need to teach them all that God has commanded us and we should remember that He is with us always to the end of the age.

Now, as my friend pointed out, discipleship means coming alongside someone and nurturing them and helping them grow in their Christianity. Social media is not the best platform for mentoring someone in their Christian faith. But, it gives us an opportunity for others to see our love for Christ. It provides an opportunity for others to see and want the peace and joy that we have found in our Lord and Savior. It gives us a chance to meet “true friends” and share the love of Christ with them. Or, not.

Lastly, I want you to ask yourself if God were scrolling through your Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, whatever you have, would He be pleased? My friend, time is drawing short. We don’t know if Jesus will return for His people in the next minute or thousands of years from now. But with news predicting a famine, the current car shortage and the things going on in our news I believe it will be sooner rather than later. Either way, I am ready. I pray that you are too.

God just may scroll through your social media on judgment day. We are told in Matthew 12:36 that we will give an account for every careless word spoken. I believe this will apply to words typed as well, just sayin’. If you are not honoring God with your words and your actions, it’s not too late. We are told in 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. It goes on to say in verse 10 that if we say we have no sin, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

Does your social media show God’s word in you? If not, you make want to rethink that.

Have a great day!
