What We Don’t See

Therefore, we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day. For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory. So we do not focus on what is seen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.  2 Corinthians 4:16-18 HCSB

As Christians, we are asked to do something that sounds ridiculous on the surface. The Bible asks us to believe some pretty outlandish things like a Savior born of a virgin. This Savior went around healing the sick and raising the dead and He, Himself raised from the dead. We are asked to have a relationship with someone we have never seen and we are asked to love Him with all our heart, all our soul, and all our mind (Deuteronomy 6:5). We are asked to put all of our focus on Him whom we have never seen (Matthew 16:33). We are asked to believe that unseen angels guard our steps (Psalm 91:11). We are asked to believe that if we love Him with all our heart and focus on Him that He will provide all we need (Matthew 6:34). We are also asked to believe that He sent His son to die for us (John 3:16) and no matter what we have done, forgiveness is available if we only ask (1 John 1:9). We are even told that only fools believe that He doesn’t exist (Psalm 14:1). We are encouraged to be in close relationship with Him and pray to Him continually and give thanks to Him in all circumstances, even the bad things that happen (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18).

Now on the surface all of this sounds a little nuts, right? But if you are a Christian then you know that trusting in God brings you peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7). You know that He gives you strength to do anything He has called you to do (Philippians 4:13). You know that if you choose to reside in Him that He offers shelter and protection (Psalm 91:1). You know that you don’t have to fight your battles, you only have to position yourself, stand still and see the salvation of the LORD (2 Chronicles 20:17). You know that this God that you have never seen has great plans for you (Jeremiah 29:11). You know that this God that you have never seen works all things out for your good because you love Him and do your best to live your life according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). You know that if God is for you then it is senseless for man to come against you (Romans 8:31).

We can’t see God, but we can see his majesty and his glory all around us. We see it in the beauty of a sunrise. We see His works in the flowers, trees, animals, oceans, and a glorious sunset. We see Him work things out for us when we struggle against impossible odds (Matthew 19:26). We know that we serve a risen Savior who is alive with us today. We know that He has sent His Holy Spirit to dwell in us (John 14:16) if we will only allow Him to do so.

We know that things that we see like people, trees, buildings, cars, all of these things are temporary and have the potential of being removed from our lives. We also know that God exists and is eternal. We know that none of these earthly things really matter and this is why we should focus on God and let Him handle the mess that is down here.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9 tells us that we are pressured in every way but not crushed; we are perplexed but not in despair; we are persecuted but not abandoned; we are struck down but not destroyed. If we reside in God and His Holy Spirit resides in us, we are indestructible. We have eternal life. There is nothing on this planet that can destroy that.

If you are not a Christian then take a look at one of those crazy people that love the LORD with all they’ve got. You may find that you want what we have. If you profess to be a Christian, then know that the lost are watching you. They may be confused about who you are and what you do. Your talk and behavior could draw them like a moth to a flame or it could put up a stumbling block which would be disastrous for you and them (Matthew 18:7).

Ask God each day to search your heart and show you any error in your ways (Psalm 139:23). Ask Him to fill you with His Holy Spirit so that the love of Christ may shine through you and be seen by others. This allows us to serve as a beacon of light that draws the lost to Christ.

I’ve never seen God, but I’ve seen Him work and I must say it is awesome. I see His works each and every day and I thank God for Him and all that He has done for me. This is why I encourage anyone who is not in close relationship with Him to get into a good, solid relationship with your Lord and Savior. And remember what we see is temporary, but the love of a God that we have never seen is forever.

Have a great day!
