Suffering Through a Power Outage?

Now this is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in Him. If we say, “We have fellowship with Him,” yet we walk in darkness, we are lying and not practicing the truth. But if we walk in light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.   1 John 1:5-8 HCSB

Darkness and light. We need both. We need darkness to sleep. Some, however, like to do their evil deeds under the cover of darkness. Jesus said in John 3:19, “This, then, is the judgment: The light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For everyone who practices wicked things hates the light and avoids it, so that his deeds may not be exposed. But anyone who lives by the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be shown to be accomplished by God.”

Yesterday, I went to work. Five minutes after I got there a power outage occurred and I was unable to do what I needed to do. I find it interesting that we refer to the lights going off as a power outage. Spiritually, it’s the same thing.

When we walk in the light or walk with God and do our best to please Him, we can be at peace because we know we are protected by His power. We know we can draw from His power and His strength.

But when we walk in the dark, we experience a power outage. Our sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2) and His awesome power.

As Jesus said, many people prefer the dark because they can practice their evil deeds and go unnoticed. What’s interesting is God knows what they do even under the cover of darkness.

We can’t have it both ways. We can’t live in light and darkness at the same time. Light overcomes darkness (John 1:5). When we walk into a dark room and turn on the light, the light overcomes the darkness. We have to choose whether we want to remain in the dark or turn on the light.

So, I want to ask you today, are you suffering through a power outage? Are you stumbling around in the dark because you have things going on in your life that you would rather keep hidden? Well, Jesus also said in Mark 4:22 says, “For nothing is concealed except to be revealed, and nothing hidden except to come to light.” Luke 12:2-3 says, “There is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered, nothing hidden that won’t be made known. Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.”

When the power goes out, we want some kind of light. We can use candles, flashlights or a generator. Or we can choose to remain in the dark.

The same is true for spiritual darkness. Jesus is our light. We can choose Him or reject Him? People usually tend to reject Him because they don’t want their deeds exposed. We just read in Mark 4:22 and Luke 12:2-3 that they are going to eventually be exposed anyway. So, does it really benefit anyone in any way to remain in darkness?

If you have deeds keeping you in darkness, let them go. John said in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Repent and let it go. Give it over to God. When we do this, we step into the light.

Even in darkness we hide nothing from God. We simply suffer through a power outage. We can choose to turn the light on and let it shine for others. Why not do that today? I can tell you from personal experience, you will never regret it.

Have a great day!
