As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and saw the Egyptians coming after them. Then the Israelites were terrified and cried out to the LORD for help. They said to Moses: “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you took us to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?”
Isn’t this what we told you in Egypt: Leave us alone so that we may serve the Egyptians? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”
But Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid. Stand firm and see the LORD’s salvation. He will provide for you today: for the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you must be quiet.”
Exodus 14:10-14 HCSB
To really know what is going on in this Scripture passage, we must read Exodus 14 from the beginning. In vv. 1-4, God tells Moses to turn back. He tells Moses he wants Pharaoh to think they are wandering around lost and He will harden Pharaoh’s heart and Pharaoh will pursue them. Then God tells Moses He has a plan. This plan will bring Him glory by means of Pharaoh and all the Egyptians will know He is Yahweh. They will know He is the one true God.
God told Moses He had a plan, but He didn’t go into details with Moses about what He had planned. God doesn’t usually tell us what He has planned for us. So, when we are facing something like what the Israelites were facing seeing our enemy closing in on us and we have nowhere to go except the Red Sea, it can be terrifying. It can really test our faith, but what God wants is for us to have faith in Him and trust in His plan. I promise you He has a plan.
There have been many times in my life, I have forged ahead with my plans and hoped God would be on board. Well, I had to learn the hard way it just doesn’t work that way. I had worked so hard to accomplish my goals only to find some of them were unattainable. This was because God had other plans for me. The awesome thing is the work I had done was work He would use in the future to accomplish His plan for my life.
As the Israelites face this terrifying ordeal, their first choice is to complain. They confront Moses and ask him why he brought them out into the wilderness. They were sure they were going to die.
Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever felt like the enemy is closing in on you and your situation is hopeless? It took me a while to learn to not grumble and complain in this situation, but praise God. Praise God for His presence as you go through this difficult time. And even though you have no idea what He has planned, praise Him for the plan He has for you. I can assure you He has a plan.
We are told in Isaiah 55:8-9 that God’s ways and thoughts are higher than ours. He knows what our future holds; we don’t.
I get it. We like to know what is going on, especially when it involves us. This is where faith comes in. We are told in Hebrews 11:6 it is impossible to please God without faith. We have to trust in God’s plan.
We have to trust that God is working all things for our good if we are loving Him with our whole heart and doing the work He has called us to do (Romans 8:28).
Will you grumble and complain or will you surrender to His plan for your life and trust in Him.
God put them by the Red Sea so He could part it. He planned to walk them through on dry ground and He did. He planned to destroy Pharaoh and his army, and He did. It was a good plan. Learn a lesson from this, trust in God’s plan.
Have a great day!
