A greedy person provokes conflict, but whoever trusts in the LORD will prosper. Proverbs 28:25 HCSB
The Bible has a lot to say about greed. Proverbs 28:22 says, “A greedy man is in a hurry for wealth; he doesn’t know that poverty will come to him.” This particular chapter of Proverbs speaks of wealth gained quickly or through deceit. Verse 19 says the one who works his land will have plenty of food, but whoever chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty.
Verse 20 says a faithful man will have many blessings, but one in a hurry to get rich will not go unpunished. Verse 27 talks about giving and says one who gives to the poor will not be in need, but one who turns his eyes away will receive many curses.
No good comes from greed. Greed is defined as an intense, selfish desire for money, power, or food. The Biblical definition of greed is a sinful attitude of the heart that desires more than what God has provided. Jesus said in Luke 12:15, “Watch out and be on guard against all greed because one’s life is not in the abundance of his possessions.”
We can be greedy with our money. 1 Timothy 6:9-10 says, “But those who want to be rich fall into temptation, a trap and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge people into destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.”
Being greedy with our money may lead to not tithing as we should. It may lead to refusing to give to those who are in need. Sadly, this will lead to our own ruin. Don’t take my word for it. Read Proverbs 28.
We can be greedy with our time. We can refuse to go to church or to help those in need choosing to spend our time on our own selfish desires.
Selfish desires are what greed is all about. I caution you to put God before all things and everyone else. I caution you to put others’ needs above your own. Above all put yourself last if you want to have peace and joy in your life. Let go of any greed and be thankful for all God has provided.
Be content with what you have. Paul said in Philippians 4:12, “I know how to have a little, and I know how to have a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content-whether well fed or hungry, whether in need or abundance. Paul goes on to say in verse 13 that he is able to do all things through Christ who strengthens Him.
Our strength, peace, and joy are found in Christ. Surrender your all to Him. Be content with what he provides for you. Trust in Him in the good times and the bad.
Have a great day!
