The Old You Won’t Do

Jesus replied, “I assure you:  Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”     John 3:3 HCSB

We are just natural born sinners. David said in Psalm 51:5, “Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.”

Now this doesn’t mean we are conceived in sin, or it is a sin to conceive. It means we are sinful creatures from conception. You don’t have to teach a two-year-old to lie. You don’t have to teach them to take another child’s toy or to take a cookie off the plate after they have been told not to. Since Adam and Eve sinned in the garden of Eden we have been born with a sinful nature. It’s who we are because of our humanity.

That sounds pretty hopeless, doesn’t it? But a man named Nicodemus who was a Pharisee, or an expert and a teacher of the Jewish law came to Jesus one night. He knew Jesus was from God. He understood that Jesus could not have performed the miracles he performed without God.

This is when Jesus explained to him that we must be born again in order to see the kingdom of God, or in order to be saved and go to heaven. Nicodemus didn’t understand what Jesus meant. This is understandable, because the process of being born a second time seems impossible, right?

Jesus explained to Him that by being born again, He was referring to being saved or accepting Christ as your Savior.

Because we are born into this world through a physical birth with a sinful nature, our old creation or our old self just won’t do. We can’t just live as we please and get into heaven. It just doesn’t work that way. We must become a new creation in Christ. We must die to our old sinful self and be re-born to a new life in Christ. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come.”

Have you been born again? I truly believe we are in the end times or the last days. None of us know how long we have here. If you have been born again you will want to be rid of your old sinful ways. You will make Jesus your priority. You will want to stay in constant contact with Him through prayer and Bible study. And most importantly, you will love Him with all your heart and want to live a life that is pleasing to Him. You will want to show your love to Him by serving Him and serving others. That’s what spiritual rebirth looks and feels like.

The old sinful person doesn’t worry so much about doing what is right, only what they want to do. When we are saved, we want to do what God commands us to do. We want to live our lives in a way that pleases Him and brings Him glory, honor and praise.

Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:20, “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, certain that God is appealing through us. We plead on Christ’s behalf, “Be reconciled to God.”

The only way we can be reconciled to God is to die to our life of sin. We must be born again and become a new creation in Christ. The old you will never do. It’s the new creation that will continue to grow and be a work in progress until He calls us home to be with Him.

Trust in Him, believe in Him and be saved. Surrender your life to Him. He gave His all for you so that you could be reborn and experience the peace and joy that comes through a life lived with Him.

Have a great day!
