Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
1 Corinthians 15:45 ESV
While the consequences of Adam and Eve’s sin is still being suffered by us, their descendants, today. There is hope. But there is only one hope. Jesus is our only hope. Our scripture passage today speaks of the first Adam who was the first man to live in the universe that God created.
After the sin committed by Adam and Eve it became an epidemic. One of their sons killed the other. And so the decline continued. It continued until Noah’s day. In Genesis 6 God was saw that man’s wickedness was so widespread over all the earth that he regretted making man and was grieved in his heart (vs. 5-6). It was so bad that God decided to wipe man off the face of the earth. But one man, Noah, had found favor with God. God spared Noah and his family. Noah followed God’s instructions for building the ark and also for loading the animals onto the ark.
What I want you to understand is this, things were so bad and God was so grieved that He decided to wipe man from the face of the earth. We think it’s bad now and constantly getting worse, makes you wonder doesn’t it?
Now one thing that we know is that Jesus was there from the very beginning. God knew that by giving man free will that man would mess up and would need a Savior. He had it all worked out from the beginning.
Adam and Eve could have resisted that temptation in the garden, just as we have the option of resisting the temptation that comes our way today. We are told in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that no temptation has overtaken us except that which is common to humanity. God is faithful and will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can handle, but with the temptation, he also provides a way of escape so that we can bear it.
There is always another way. We don’t have to succumb to the devil’s temptation. God always provides a way out for us.
We can’t go back and change what Adam and Eve did back there in the garden of Eden. We can’t even go back and change the wrong things that we have done. What’s done is done. But our slates can be wiped clean with the blood of Jesus Christ. We can be washed clean by Jesus’ blood. We are told in 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sins that Jesus is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
But we must choose that. We must choose to come to Him. We must choose to draw near to Him. We must choose to confess our sins to Him and ask Him to forgive us and help us not to make the same mistakes again.
The first Adam messed up and allowed sin to creep into an otherwise perfect universe that God had just made. But praise God, He was prepared for this. Remember in the garden when God not only told Adam and Eve that they could no longer eat from the tree of life, but even posted a cherubim and a whirling sword of fire to guard it? Well, we may not be able to eat from the tree of life, but we can accept Christ and have our names written in the Lamb’s book of Life.
If you have not trusted in Christ as your Savior, please don’t wait. None of us know how much time we have here on earth. Tomorrow may be too late.
You may not have resisted the devil’s temptation before, but you can resist it now with the help of the Holy Spirit. You can trust in Jesus, the last Adam, as your Savior. You can ask Him to fill you with His Holy Spirit to help you resist temptation and be assured of spending eternity in glory with your heavenly Father.
Have a great day!
