The Evil All Around Us

For You are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil cannot dwell with You. The boastful cannot stand in Your presence; you hate all evildoers. You destroy those who tell lies; the Lord abhors a man of bloodshed and treachery. But I enter Your house by the abundance of Your faithful love; I bow down toward Your holy temple in reverential awe of You. Lord lead me in Your righteousness because of my adversaries; make your way straight before me. Psalms 5:4-8 HCSB

If you are a fan of horror movies, then you should have no problem finding entertainment. Just turn the news on, there are plenty of things going on in our own backyards to strike fear in our hearts.  I don’t know about you, but lately I seem to see evil everywhere I turn. The news reports are filled with awful things like human trafficking, family members turning against each other, it’s a scary world.

If you are watching a scary movie, you have several options. First of all, you can turn the TV off or leave the movie theatre if it gets too bad.  But what about the horrors that we see in real life. For those, you can turn to God. You can find safety with Him.  You can trust God to lead you on a pathway that is safe.  Psalms 23:1 says, Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

I don’t know what your world is like these days, but I can assure you that if I was not walking with God, my world would be a scary place.  I choose to stay in His presence because I feel safe and secure there.  I choose to reside in His shelter.  God doesn’t beat us over the head and drag us into his realm of safety, it’s a choice we make.  He doesn’t lock us in there and refuse to let us leave, either.  We can make the decision to go or to stay.

A scary movie is one thing because you can tell yourself, it’s just a movie, right? But when your life spins out of control and becomes scary, then what?  Turn to God, all things are within His control.  He can handle whatever problems you have.  Even if you have gotten yourself into a fine mess, he can be with you through that as well.

As you go through this day, I encourage you to be mindful of the mighty God we serve. I encourage you to walk with him in safety and be secure. He’s only a prayer away.  He is waiting and ready for you to call upon Him.  I walked in a scary place for many years.  What was scariest, is that I was dumb enough to think I could do it on my own.  I thought I could keep my life under control.  It’s kind of like in the scary movie where the girl who is being chased runs upstairs instead of out the back door.  You are watching this and you know that’s the worst possible thing to do, but you have no control over it.  There have been times when my life was like that.  I knew I was making the wrong moves, but I seemed to be powerless to stop myself. I was being sucked in by the evil in the world.  Now, my friend, that’s scary.

I did the only thing I could do. I turned it all over to God. I moved into His shelter and trusted Him to keep me safe.  Now there is still evil all around me, but I have learned not to fear that.  I know that things may get a little rough and rocky at times, but I also know that God’s got this.  Psalms 91:7-8 puts it this way, Though a thousand fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, the pestilence will not reach you.  You will only see it with your eyes and witness the punishment of the wicked.

If your world looks more like a horror movie than a Hallmark movie, then turn to God.  He can clean it up and straighten it out.  Don’t kid yourself into thinking that you know what to do, or you can handle it, just trust in Him.  Proverbs 3:7 says, Don’t consider yourself to be wise, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.

Now fear the Lord, means not to be shaking in your boots at the thought of Him, but it means to have a deep respect for Him and a reverential awe of Him. Turning away from evil is just what it says. Sometimes evil looks good and fun, we must turn away from it and avoid being drawn in. We are told in 2 Corinthians 11:14 that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.  If he didn’t make sin look so good no one would buy into it, right?

Turn to God and away from evil.  When it seems as though you are surrounded by evil and there is nowhere to turn, know that you can turn to God.  You can find safety and shelter in Him.  Psalm 91:2, I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”  My friend, in these, the last days, we are truly surrounded by evil.  I pray that you will find shelter and safety under the protective wings of your loving Savior.

Have a great day!
