The Dead Battery

I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.     Philippians 4:13 LSB

We’ve all experienced the dead battery. Maybe you’ve gotten in your car to go somewhere, and you turn the key, and it won’t start. Maybe, like me a couple days ago, you went to fire up your laptop and got a little message. My little message said, “Warning, battery critically low.” Or maybe you have forgotten to charge your phone and had it die on you.

The point is the power source is extremely important. God is our power source. What we do we can do only because He gives us the strength and power to do it. Jesus Himself said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life and no man comes to the Father except through Me.” He also said in John 15:5, “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, apart from Me you can do nothing.”

God is sovereign. He controls everything that goes on in this universe. I’ll admit it’s kind of hard to wrap my head around the fact that He is sovereign, yet He gives us free will. We are free to choose to worship Him or not to worship Him.

He is our power source, however, so without Him we are useless. As Jesus said in John 15:5, we can do nothing. Now we can live and breathe and go through our day to day lives without Him. We can tell ourselves, “I’ve got this. I’ll do it my way.” But we are lying to ourselves. We are believing the devil’s lies and this gets us nowhere.

A car, a laptop, a phone or anything else that needs power is useless without a good, strong, well-charged power source and so are we.

A weak power source isn’t much better than none at all. God is not only our power source, but He is a strong power source that provides us with great strength. Our Scripture passage doesn’t mean that with God’s strength we can go out and lift a thousand pounds. It means that when God puts us in tough situations, we can come through it with His strength. But we have to stay plugged in. We must remain connected to Him.

For many years, I didn’t go to Sunday School. I thought it was for kids. I started back in Sunday School about 15 or 16 years ago. My mom was my teacher and encouraged me to return to Sunday school. My husband wanted to give it a try. I was so glad we did. I thought I knew the Bible. I was amazed at how much was to be learned. We can never know all there is to know about the Bible. That’s why Bible study is so important. It’s like an ever flowing well of information to strengthen us and help us to live our lives better. My husband was just returning to church, and he wanted to also go to Sunday night Bible study and Wednesday night Bible study and prayer meeting. This was like getting recharged mid-week.

We have to plug in to God’s power. We do this through Bible study, regular church attendance, involvement in church activities, prayer, and serving God.

If you feel like your battery is critically low, maybe you need to plug into your power source. Surrender to Christ today, He will give you all the strength you need. He will walk with you through the fire and the flame (Isaiah 43:2).

Our power is found in Him. I don’t care how much physical or mental strength or knowledge you possess; without Him you can do nothing. Surrender to Christ today.

Have a great day!
