Surrender or Retreat and Suffer Defeat!

But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. For by yours words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.  Matthew 12:36-37 HCSB

Our lives are one continuous spiritual battle with the devil battling Christ for our souls. If we surrender to Christ, we will experience the victory and spend eternity in heaven with God the Father. If we retreat to our old ways of living, we will be defeated by the devil.

For the last couple days we have been discussing unforgivable sin. We have been in Matthew 12. Jesus told the Pharisees that the sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit could never be forgiven. The Bible tells us that if we repent, God is faithful to forgive. So, how can their be an unforgivable sin?

I don’t know about you but when I think of blasphemy, I think of cursing. The Pharisees had attributed the work of the Holy Spirit to Satan. Jesus warns them. He wants each and everyone of His children, even those that oppose Him, to be saved and to spend eternity in glory with Him. But, if we oppose Him how can we spend eternity with Him? Well this is really the root of this whole unforgivable sin problem here.

If we reject the Holy Spirit there will come a time when it will be too late. We are told in Romans 1:21 that even though they knew God, they failed to honor Him or give thanks. They knew who God was, they just didn’t make Him a priority in their lives. They didn’t seek Him and love Him and honor Him with all they had. Their foolish hearts were darkened. They thought they were wise, but became fools. In Romans 1:24, it says that God gave them over to their lusts and the impurity of their hearts to the point where they dishonored themselves. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie.

My friend if you rely on your own wisdom, as these poor Pharisees did, and not God given knowledge you are heading down the wrong path. If you reject the Holy Spirit, your heart will be hardened to the point that God will just give you over to your own evil desires. At that point it is too late. You will face judgment and it will not be good for you.

Even though you may have known God and claimed to love Him and adorned a church pew every Sunday you will not inherit God’s kingdom. In Matthew 7:22-23 Jesus tells them that not everyone who calls Him Lord will be saved, because He will say to them that prophesied, cast out demons, and performed many miracles in His name, “I never knew you. Depart from me, you lawbreakers!” God sees what’s in our hearts. If you truly love the Lord, you want His Holy Spirit to dwell within your heart. You want Him to help you to do right and to convict you when you do wrong. And if you don’t, then you will have your hearts hardened. In Matthew 13:14 Jesus speaks of the fulfilling of the prophecy in Isaiah which says that we will hear and not understand, we will see and not perceive. When we reach this point, we fail to surrender to Christ and will suffer defeat.

So, today my friend I ask where are you in this battle? Have you approached God, but retreated when the going got rough? Have you surrendered to Christ trusting in Him to fight your battles? You can’t do both. You can’t surrender your life to Christ and then retreat and go back to your old ways. Surrendering to Christ brings victory, but retreating allows the devil to defeat you.

I beg of you today to accept the Holy Spirit. I beg of you to respect and not reject the Holy Spirit. Ask God to fill your heart with His Holy Spirit. Your heart is either filled with His Holy Spirit or filled with sin. God gives us free will to choose. Hebrews 10:26 tells us that if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins.

The sin from which we can’t be forgiven is the sin from which we refuse to repent. When we reject the Holy Spirit we are refusing to let go of our sin. We are refusing to repent and ask God to help us escape the bondage of our sin. We are retreating into the darkness of sin.

Once you reject the Holy Spirit, your hearts may be hardened, you won’t understand and you won’t perceive. You just won’t get it. At that point, you reach the point of no return. You will have exchanged wisdom for foolishness. At that point, God may turn you over to your evil desires. I promise you, you don’t want that to happen! Surrender to God today and live victoriously.

Have a great day!
