Stick With The Truth

Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.  Proverbs 30:5 ESV

You ever feel like you just don’t know what to believe? You can ask the same question of 10 different medical professionals and get at least five different answers. This is why it is recommended that we get a second and sometimes a third opinion when considering a life altering or threatening medical procedure. When my dad was in the hospital, he had eight different doctors and each of them had a different plan for his aftercare.

I won’t even speak of news reports. Who knows what is true in all that mess? I’m sure the truth lies somewhere in between. When you work in law enforcement you accept the fact that you are going to be lied to on a regular basis. Failed drug screens had some really colorful explanations. That didn’t upset me, I expected it. We don’t want to be lied to by those we love, however. We want them to tell us the truth even if it hurts. We need trust and respect in those kinds of relationships.

The most important truth we need to know is the truth that leads us to salvation. My friend, nothing in this old evil world matters as much as our salvation. Nothing matters more than where we will spend eternity. When those matters are taken into consideration, you better be sure you know the truth. Our Scripture passage says every word of God proves true. I have read the Bible through several times. I have begun studying the Bible and I love the way it always tells the truth.

One way I could tell if someone was telling the truth when I worked in law enforcement was if their story remained consistent. If you waited a couple days and asked them about it again, would the answer be the same? Liars don’t often have a good memory. The other way was by various witnesses. Would they all collaborate and tell the same version of the story, or would the versions vary? When we look at the Bible, we have 66 books with 40 different authors over a timespan of about 1,500 years. But if you study the Bible, it remains constant. It does not contradict Itself. In fact, you can actually use Scripture to verify Scripture. This is why most Bibles have cross references. It will tell you what Scripture aligns with or basically says the same thing as the verse you are reading. It is consistent through the Old and the New Testaments. It is consistent through the various authors, and it is consistent through time even until today. This is because it was God who inspired the writing of the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

We live in a world where the truth is becoming something we hope for but rarely see. My friend often says, “It’s Isaiah 5:20,” which says, “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” We live in a world where we don’t know what to believe. You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist to question what we are being told. A lot of it makes no sense at all but yet we are expected to not question it.

Romans 1:18 says the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. Paul goes on to say in Romans 1:24-25, “Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.”

We are expected to know the truth. God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). His truth is not confusing. If we trust in Him and acknowledge Him in all we do (Proverbs 3:5-6), we will know the truth. In order to know the truth, we must study His Holy Word. We must not be deceived by false teachers and prophets. We must also be very careful not to add to or subtract anything for His Word. We should study His word and extract what is in there rather than study His word by adding our own ideas or thoughts about what it is saying.

The end is near. If we study God’s word, we will know the truth and the truth will set us free (John 8:32). Don’t neglect to study God’s word. It’s the only truth we need.

Have a great day!
