I don’t say this out of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know both how to have a little, and I know how to have a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content-whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me.     Philippians 4:11-13 HCSB

These words were written by Paul from prison. Paul suffered greatly during his time of ministry. He lists these sufferings in 2 Corinthians 11:23-27. Paul was imprisoned many times, beaten nearly to death many times, five times he received 39 lashes from Jews. Three times he was beaten with rods by the Romans. He was stoned and shipwrecked. He faced many dangers including rivers, robbers, his own people, Gentles, and false brothers. He faced labor and hardship. He dealt with many sleepless nights, hunger and thirst and often went without food, cold and lacking clothing. Yet he was content. How does that work?

We complain if the church pews are too hard. We complain if the church is too cold or too hot. We complain if the coffee is too strong or too weak. We complain about the colors in the sanctuary such as carpet and walls. We live in a world where there is constant complaining. So, how was it Paul suffered so and was content?

Well, I’m glad you asked. Paul had found his contentment in Christ and Christ alone. Psalm 121 says, I lift my eyes toward the mountains. “Where will my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth.” There will be times we will suffer in our Christianity. We are never promised a rose garden. God does, however, promise to walk us through the difficult times we face.

Paul had witnessed such great miracles as an earthquake that opened the doors of the prison. Yet, he did not run but stayed and witnessed to the guard. He ended up bringing this guard and his family to Christ that night (Acts 16:25-34).

Paul worked for the Lord. He found his contentment and his satisfaction from the Lord and not from his circumstances. And there you have it. The difference is Paul was focused on Christ. In Philippians 4:8 Paul says to focus on what is good and pure. He was focused on the Lord. He was focused on bringing others to Christ. His circumstances did not matter to him because he knew God was in control. He knew whether he lived or died, God had him.

Many years ago, I went through some hard times. Many times, I found myself quoting Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I understood God was walking me through these difficult times. I also knew by staying focused on Him through Bible study and prayer, I could get through whatever came my way with His help.

I encourage you today to be content with your circumstances and trust God. You may not understand why today or ever, but know He walks with you every step of the way. Don’t grumble and complain about what you lack but be grateful for what you have. That is the secret to being content no matter your circumstances.
