“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” John 14:1-4 (NIV)
Here Jesus tells his disciples very plainly that God the father has many rooms just waiting for them. He tells them that He is going to prepare a place for them, that he will come back and take them with Him so that they may be with Him. I love the last verse “You know the way to the place where I am going.”
As the summer is drawing to a close and school is starting back, many families are sneaking in one last vacation. Just a couple more days at the beach or at a resort with a nice pool. If you are like me you venture to the same place each year. I have a couple friends that I like to just go and hang out with. We meet a couple more friends for dinner, do some shopping and spend some quality time just being lazy. A couple summers ago, we tried to save some money and tried a different hotel in the same town. What a disaster that was. We ended up leaving that hotel and going to our usual place. Now there is no question where we are going and where we will be staying.
It’s like that for Christians. We know where Jesus is, we know how to get there. We know that there is a wonderful place just waiting for us to come and take up residency there.
The problem is that sometimes we don’t live like we know where we are going. Sometimes we worry and fret and don’t give our troubles to God. Sometimes we get agitated with people who don’t behave the way they should and in turn we don’t treat them the way we should. Sometimes we act like lost souls and not like the princes and princesses that we are. We are royalty. Our Father is the King of Kings. We are to live a life of servitude down here. We are to treat others better than they deserve., because God treats us better than we deserve. We do these things because we know where we are going and we know how to get there.
You see if you lived in Texas and you wanted to go to California, you certainly would not drive in an easterly direction to get there. If you were in Texas and wanted to go to California, you would head west, right?
As Christians, we can’t expect to be mean spirited, condescending and arrogant and expect God to honor this type of behavior, right? The Bible tells us that we are to be patient, kind, loving, forgiving, and if we do get angry, we are not to let it cause us to sin.
Life is a journey. As we live our life on earth, we need to be mindful of the fact that we are just passing through. We are foreigners in this land. We are headed for an eternity in heaven with God our Father.
So be sure that your room is reserved and be sure that you daily strike out in the right direction. Have a great day!
