The eyes of the LORD are everywhere, observing the wicked and the good. Proverbs 15:3 HCSB
When I was growing up, we didn’t have security cameras everywhere. I can recall a boy I dated in high school. We went on one date, when I refused to go out with him again, he began spying on me. Or, at least he had someone else spy on me and report back to him. It didn’t take long for me to figure out who was spying for him. Hall and Oates had a song titled Private Eyes that was released in the early 80’s. At a high school dance, I asked the DJ to play that song and dedicated it to the spy. When he realized I had figured it out, he stopped spying for the guy. Now today, we call that stalking.
I would imagine that stalking is much easier today than it was back then. I mean most people just put it all out there for everyone to see anyway, right? People are constantly posting on social media where they are, what they are eating, who they are with, what they are thinking. It leaves very little to the imagination.
And even if we choose not to share everything with hundreds of so-called “friends” or followers, we are under surveillance almost constantly. There are security cameras everywhere we go. Our phones can be used as tracking devices and can also be used to listen in on our lives. Our smart TVs do the same. Drones can be flown into our back yard and we can be photographed. Now here in our state that is illegal. I have a friend who has a pending court hearing on that very matter.
So, let’s just say that someone had “eyes” on you and a microphone throughout the day. What would they see and hear? Would they see someone who imitated Christ? We are told in Ephesians 5:1 and 1 Corinthians 11:1 that we are to be imitators of Christ. Is that what they would see? Or maybe they would see someone who imitates Christ on Sundays, but the devil throughout the rest of the week. Would they see someone who exhibits the fruit of the Spirit? Would they see you exhibiting love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23) as you go through the day? Or would they see someone who is unloving, grumpy, without peace, without patience, unkind, lacking in faith, harsh and exhibiting very little self-control? Would they see someone who plots revenge as the Bible clearly tells us not to do in Romans 12:19?
Some of us put on our Sunday best when we are around our church friends and family and our devil’s horns when we are away. We have become so accustomed to being under surveillance that I think we just ignore it. Sadly, we also ignore the fact that God sees all. He sees it all, good and bad.
In Galatians 5:16 we are told to walk by the Spirit so that we do not carry out the desires of the flesh. When you imitate Christ, God sees that. When you mock Christ and grieve the Holy Spirit, He sees that too.
It’s not just the security cameras and the so-called smart devices that you have to worry about. What you should be worried about is what God sees. You shouldn’t care what your so-called “friends” and followers think but only what God thinks (Galatians 1:10). His eyes are the only eyes that matter and they are on you all the time. He even knows what you are thinking, so I encourage you to be very careful. We are told in Matthew 12:36, Romans 12:14, and 2 Corinthians 5:10 that each one of us will give an account before God. In Matthew, it tells us that we will give an account of every idle word spoken. God is watching and God is listening. Are you words and your actions pleasing to Him or does it grieve Him? Give that some thought as you go through the day. And also give it a lot of thought before you type a post or speak.
Have a great day!
