Now when Moses saw that the people were out of control-for Aaron had let them get out of control to be a derision among their enemies-Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, “Whoever is for the LORD, come to me!” And all the sons of Levi gathered together to him. Exodus 32:25-26 NASB
Many people are afraid to choose a side. We don’t want to offend anyone. We don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. But my friend, in life we must choose a side. We must decide if we are for the Lord or against the Lord. In Matthew 12:30, Jesus said, “Who is not for me is against me.”
In our Scripture passage for today, the Israelites were in big trouble with God. They had gotten tired of waiting for Moses to come down from the mountain. They had asked Aaron to build them a god and he did. He built a golden calf from their jewelry. God was very upset with them.
God had wanted to destroy them, but Moses pleaded to God not to destroy them, and God relented. Moses stood and offered for everyone who was for God to come to him. Now you would think knowing they were in such big trouble, everyone would have gone to stand by Moses, but they didn’t.
Our Scripture passage tells us the Levites came and stood by Moses. What is interesting about this is the Levites had been cursed back in Genesis by their grandfather, Jacob. They had been a violent bunch and Jacob had predicted no good for them.
But God had other plans. Moses and Aaron came from the Levite tribe. We know God saved Moses for the purpose of leading the Israelites out of Egypt and to the Promised Land. And in this moment when the men of the Levite tribe went to Moses indicating they were siding with the LORD, they were given a gruesome assignment. They did not back down but did as they were told.
They were assigned to draw their swords and kill over 3,000 of their fellow Israelites. In choosing to be on the Lord’s side and then doing as the Lord requested of them, they redeemed themselves.
What about you? Have you picked a side? Do you flip flop back and forth because God asks you to do some hard stuff? Or have you committed to follow God’s commands?
There was one man who followed God’s commands even to death on a cross. Jesus Christ sacrificed Himself so we might have eternal life. We have the choice to be on Gods’ side or on the devil’s side.
Don’t be horrified when I say the devil’s side because truthfully there is only one of two choices. Either we side with God, or we side with the devil. You need to figure out whose side you are on before it is too late. There will be no fence straddling.
There was a time in my life when I am sad to say I was on the devil’s side. I was believing his lies and doing his will. But that became exhausting. It left me heartbroken. I had to give it all over to God. I had to come to God. I had to choose God. I have never regretted that decision.
My prayer for you today is that you will do the same.
Have a great day!
