Our days are numbered

All our days pass away under your wrath;  we finish our years with a moan.  Our days may come to seventy years or eighty, if our strength endures;  yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.  If only we knew the power of your anger!  Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due.  Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.  Psalm 90:9-13 NIV

If you were looking for something lighthearted and fun this morning, sorry.  I felt that we need to realize that we serve a God of wrath.  We serve a God of justice.  When we look around at the world we live in, it seems as those most people are totally oblivious to this fact.  People do mean, evil, wicked things to other people.  People plot evil and yet they don’t seem to realize that their days are numbered.

If you are not a Christian and you just happen to be reading this out of curiosity, then let me tell you something.  You see, if you are alive right now then it is not too late.  But you don’t know if you will be alive in the next 5 minutes so please pay careful attention to what I am saying here.  None of us know how long we will be here.  God decides how long we get to stay on this planet.

Now if you are reading this and you are not so sure that God exists, then I encourage you to look around.  The sun, the moon, the stars and the sky were all placed perfectly in position by God.  The universe works as a well oiled machine at the hand of God.  Had sin never been introduced we would all be living in this Garden of Eden or Heaven on earth atmosphere.  However, sin brought about things like bugs, weeds, poisonous snakes and natural disasters. You don’t have to take my word for it, just read Genesis chapter 3. We are still seeing God’s wrath through the numerous natural disasters in the world today.

If you are a Christian, then you know that we serve a loving and merciful God.  You also know that we serve a God who can be angry and inflict a great deal of wrath upon His people.

So whether you don’t believe in God or you love and serve Him with all your heart, or you fall somewhere in between, your days are numbered.  You won’t be here on planet earth forever.  Now if you are like me, that is great news.  I look forward to spending eternity in glory with my heavenly Father.  But I have learned that before I get there, I will literally have some hell to go through.  Romans 3:23 tells us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.  Now I will readily admit that I have had sin in my life.  Our sin does not go unpunished.  David was a great man of God, you can read all about him in the books of Samuel.  David loved God with all his heart, but he sinned.  His sin greatly displeased God and told him through the prophet Nathan that “the sword would never depart from his house”.  God turned David’s family life into one of turmoil.  His son raped his daughter, another son killed that son to avenge the daughter.  Another son lead a rebellion against David and was killed in the process.  Yet David repented of his sin, which by the way was adultery and murder, and continued to praise God.

Now if you have pain and suffering in your life I am not saying that it is because of your sin.  We know that Job was a righteous man that God allowed satan to tempt by bringing about total ruin and disaster upon him.  However, if like me you have sinned then know that although we may have angered God and brought down his wrath upon us, He still loves us.  Just like a parent that disciplines their child, they do so because they love them.  God loves us, but He will discipline us to get our attention.  He will test us to see how well we endure the hard times.  He will test us to see if we turn to Him in times of trouble.

So if you take nothing else away this morning, know this, our days are numbered.  Time on earth is short whether you live 10 years or 100 years, time is short.  So no matter what you are going through today, know that it is temporary.  Press on toward the goal of eternal life in glory with our Lord and Savior.

If you have the time today, I encourage you to read this entire Psalm. It is just 17 short verses.  Know that we can be consumed by God’s anger.  Know that he doesn’t treat sin lightly.  If you think that you have plenty of time to sin and can repent later, then you are playing a very dangerous game my friend.

I am not telling you this today so that you can say “what’s the use?”  I am telling you this today to let you know that if you are still breathing there is still hope. God may be wrathful, but he is also loving and merciful.  He will meet you where you are.  Whether you don’t believe that he exists or are just weary of doing good and continuing to suffer, He is there with you.  He knows what you are going through.  Call out to Him, He is there with open arms.  You may be going through a time of temptation by satan or you may be going through a time of testing by God, but either way, He is there for you.

If you are hurt and suffering today, He is there.  If you feel as though you are suffering at the hands of the wicked, evil people, and nothing is being done to help, He is there.  Call out to Him, draw near to Him, He is faithful and just and He will save you.  I have done many things in my life that I regret, but the best thing I have ever done is commit myself to Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.  By doing so, what have you got to lose but misery and heartache.  You can gain the peace that passes all understanding and unending joy.  So reach out to Him, you’ll be glad you did.

Have a great day!
