Last December a large group from our family traveled to New York. We hired a driver who was a great guy. We were talking about plans for the holiday and he was excited that his daughter was coming home. She had moved away and worked as a television weather forecaster in another state. He said that he told her that she worked in the only profession he knew of where one could be consistently wrong and still keep their job.
Now, I’m not putting down on meteorologists or weather forecasters. I appreciate that they try to help us prepare. I would love just once to hear them say, “Only God knows”. We live in a world where people like to think they are smart. I mean, let’s face it, we all want to think that we are smart, right? But the Bible tells us that we should not consider ourselves wise (Proverbs 3:7). When we consider ourselves wise, we tend to rely on our own understanding and fail to trust God. We are warned against this in Proverbs 3:5.
We must be willing to accept that there are things that only God knows. Only God knows what our future holds. We are told in James 4:13 that we should not say today or tomorrow we will go into a certain city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit. Verse 14 says that we don’t even know what tomorrow will bring or what our life will be. For we are like smoke that appears for a little while then vanishes. Verse 15 encourages us to preface our plans by saying if it’s the Lord’s will we will do this or that.
Only God knows when the rapture will occur or when each of us will die. We are told in Matthew 24:36 that concerning the day and hour that Christ will return, no one knows-neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, only God knows.
If you think about it, there’s a lot of stuff we just don’t know. We don’t know what the future holds. We don’t know when we will die or when Christ will call us up to Him. No matter how well we think we know someone, we never really know what they are thinking.
People make promises that they cannot keep. People claim to love us and then betray us. People are fickle and sadly don’t always obey God. If we all obeyed God’s commands, we would willingly accept the fact that there are many things we don’t know, but we would be okay with it. We would trust God completely and never waiver. We would be better friends and relatives to all those around us.
There are people all along the gulf coast from Mississippi to Texas listening to weather forecasters. Some hope they are right and some hope they are wrong. One thing we can be sure of is they don’t really know what this storm or any weather situation is going to do. Only God knows. He is in complete control. We are told in Matthew 8:27 that even the winds and the waves obey Him. This is why we must trust in Him. We must wholeheartedly seek Him and stay focused on Him.
Turn your heart and your soul and your body and your mind over to God and trust Him with it. Humble yourself before Him and give it all over to Him. He will take good care of you. We may not know what our future holds, but we know who holds our future.
I am happy to say there are many things I don’t know, but one thing I know for us is, God’s got this and that’s really all I need to know. I hope that you can say the same.
Have a great day!
