“Come, everyone who is thirsty, come to the waters; and you without money, come, buy, and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost! Why do you spend money on what is not food, and your wages on what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and you will enjoy the choicest of foods. Pay attention and come to Me; listen, so that I will make an everlasting covenant with you, the promises assured to David.” Isaiah 55:1-3 HCSB
In our Scripture passage for today, the LORD is speaking through His prophet Isaiah. He is saying that redemption and the glorious kingdom are available to for all who are willing to come. There is no money needed. Wine and milk are symbolic of abundance, satisfaction, and prosperity.
You can be penniless and experience prosperity through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
Some versions say why do you spend money on what is not bread. “Not bread” refers to the bread of deceit. Proverbs 20:17 says bread obtained by lying is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth will be filled with gravel. Jesus referred to the bread of life in John 6:32-33 when he said, “…but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
Charles Spurgeon explained Isaiah 55:2 in this way, “Having nothing people may yet possess all things. People are at no disadvantage in God’s market because their pockets are empty. They may come penniless and bankrupt and receive the riches of his grace. But the main reference of this is a spiritual one, and so the portrait here is that of people who have no spiritual money, no gold of goodness, no silver of sanctity. They are still invited to come and buy the wine and milk of heaven from a gracious God.”
We can’t afford the goodness God provides for us, but praise God, He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross to pay the price for our sins.
This redemption is available to all who are willing to come. All we have to do is come to Him and accept Christ as our Savior. We must be willing to surrender our lives to Him and repent of our sins. We are told in 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sins to Him and repent, He is faithful to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
If we are willing, He is able. He can provide all we need. We are told in Matthew 6:33 to focus on God and His kingdom and all will be provided for us.
My friend, this life on earth is temporary. Don’t let your desire for the finer things get in your way of worshiping the Lord. Trust in Him today and He will take good care of you. You may not be rich here on earth, but great riches await us in heaven, and they are permanent. Everything here is temporary. We must not allow ourselves to get hung up on wealth and possessions because these things are passing away.
If we trust in God and obey Him, we can spend eternity in heaven with God the Father. If we fail to do so we are doomed to spend eternity in the torment of hell. There is no middle ground.
Our top priority should be our own salvation and after that it should be the salvation of others. We should aspire to get as many people as we can to join us in heaven.
Trust in God today. Focus on Him and trust Him to provide all you need. Rid your life of deliberate sin and if you have trouble with that, ask God to help you. I can tell you from personal experience He will do it.
We could never afford to live in heaven and dine there, but that’s okay. Jesus paid the price. My former pastor said we have reservations in heaven and our confirmation number is John 3:16.
Have a great day!
