My Refuge

I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”  Psalm 91:2 NKJV

Do you have a safe place? Do you ever find yourself retreating to that safe place in times of trouble? In my job I deal with many people who are drug addicted and homeless. It saddens me because I often wonder about whether or not they have a safe place or a refuge in times of trouble. Of course, in their situation, times of trouble seem to be constant.

There was a time in my life when my safe place for me meant my family. I knew when things got really rough, I could turn to my parents or my sister. Once you lose a parent, however, you realize the safe place you have chosen may not always be there.

There is a safe place, however, that we can always rely on. There is a refuge that will always be there for us. We can find a safe place nestled in the arms of our Lord. Many of you know that Psalm 91 is my favorite Psalm. If you are going through times of trouble, I encourage you to read the entire Psalm. It’s just 16 verses long.

It lists all the ways God protects us in times of trouble. If you look at your newsfeed and listen to what’s going on in the communities around you, you probably see we are definitely in times of trouble. Over and over again, the Bible tells us not to fear. It also tells us not to be deceived.

We can trust in God. We can ask for wisdom and discernment. When we put our faith in God, we are less likely to be deceived. We can count on Him to protect us and provide for our needs.

I don’t care how tough you are or think you are, you still need a safe place. There is always a time when a tactical retreat is the best option. There are times when we need to find refuge. Do you have a safe place? Are you in a good, solid relationship with your Lord and Savior? If not, there is no better time than now to establish that fortress and that refuge.

Put your trust in Him. Study His word for guidance and strength during these times of trouble. Do your best to obey His commands and not let sin come between you and your relationship with Him.

God loves us more than we can imagine. He loved us enough to send His only begotten Son to die for us (John 3:16) while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). A God who loves us that much will surely protect us in the storm.

If you find yourself in hard times, come to Him. Confess your sins to Him and repent. He is faithful to forgive you and cleanse you from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). In Him you can find refuge. He will be your fortress.

Have a great day!
