Look me in the eye

The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness, how deep is that darkness!  Matthew 6:22-23

You have heard it said that the eyes are a window to the soul.  Scientists suggest that patterns in the iris can give an indication of our personalities.  This comes from a  study conducted at Orebro University in Sweden (Dailymail.com).  In this scripture passage, it tells us that the eye is the lamp of the body.

I have suffered for years with migraine headaches.  My mother used to really worry every time I got a migraine.  I tried to explain to her that it was just one of those things and that I would take some medicine and be better, no need to worry.  She worried so much that often times when I got a migraine, I would try not to let her know.  The problem came in when I had to see her.  She could always look in my eyes and tell when I had a migraine no matter how well I thought I was playing it off.  A couple months ago I had the flu and it took me almost three weeks to be completely healthy again.  My husband told me during the third week, that he could see in my eyes that I was feeling better.

Our eyes tell others a lot about us.  For law enforcement, the eyes are usually almost as good as a polygraph machine.  You learn to look in someone’s eyes and be able to tell if they are being truthful or if they are lying.   The eyes also let you know when someone’s fight or flight response is kicking in.  You learn to watch the eyes and the hands when dealing with someone who could potentially be dangerous.  Evil people will often have eyes that look empty, void of any emotion.

In today’s scripture passage, the terms healthy or unhealthy are used.  The footnote in my Bible says that healthy refers to the Greek term for generous and unhealthy refers to the Greek term for stingy.  When we love the Lord, we understand that every thing we receive from Him is a blessing or a gift.  James 1:17 tells us that every generous act and every perfect gift is from above.  You can choose to be stingy with it, in which case you may not get many more good things or you can choose to share and God will continue to bless you.  Luke 6:38 tells us to, “Give, and it will be given to you.  Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be poured into your lap.  For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”

So, what I am getting at is this, when someone looks into your eyes what do they see?  If I were to look into your eyes today, would I see darkness or light?  When you look into the mirror, what do you see?  Are you happy with what you see?

You don’t have to take my word for it, conduct your own test.  Go to a church where you feel genuine Christian love.  Look in the eyes of the church members.  Do you see a light of love?  Do you feel a spirit of joy?  Go into the world and look at those that seem to be angry at the world.  Their eyes appear dark and heavy, you can see their burden.

When we accept Jesus Christ as our savior, we receive many things that we do not deserve like mercy, grace, and unconditional love.  We begin to realize that we can cast our cares on Him because He truly cares for us (1 Peter 5:7), he will not allow us to be shaken (Psalm 55:22).  In Him, we have a refuge and a fortress (Psalm 91:2).  When we have these things and we become new creatures in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17),  we can share with those in need and show them the mercy, grace and love that Christ has shown us.

So today, if you see darkness and heaviness in your eyes, I know a great ophthalmologist that can fix you right up.  He can allow your inner light to shine through your eyes and remove any darkness.  You don’t have to schedule an appointment, you can come to Him at any time.  He can bring light and a healthy glow to your eyes.  The best thing about this doctor is that it only costs you your sorrow and pain.  He will take all that and give you life and you will have it in abundance (John 10:10).  So what are you waiting for?  Let your light shine brightly through your eyes!

Have a great day!
