All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.  2 Timothy 3:16-17  NASB

Have you ever thought about how many times a day you log into any given website? Yesterday I would be willing to say that I logged in at least 20 different times to several different websites. When we need information we just Google or Bing it, right? We have a wealth of information right there in our phone.

I recall the old days when doing a research project meant going to the library and checking out various books on the topic, but now you can just search it, log in to all these websites and have all your information right there. Two of my favorite tools today that I use are the Bing search engine and a site called openbible.info. I can enter a portion of any verse into Bing and find out the entire verse and also where it is found in the bible. Openbible.info has a topical search so I can enter any topic and it will provide up to 100 verses on that topic. I’m not very computer literate, but even I can do these things to obtain the information that I need.

But I have one question for you, are you so busy logging in that you have signed out where God’s word is concerned? Whenever I log into a site, there is usually a little button up top that says “sign out”.  This allows me to sign out of that website. When I want to read my Bible it’s much simpler. I just pick up my Bible and open it to the passage that I want to read. And of course, I do have a bible app on my phone that allows me to read my bible on my phone and also offers various study plans on just about any topic you can think of. The problem with having all this information at our finger tips is that it is addicting.  More times that I can count, I have been in a restaurant enjoying a good meal and good conversation and made the mistake of asking a question about a particular movie or some other topic. Just like guns in a gunfight, those phones are whipped out and my fellow diners are making a mad dash to see who can obtain the information first. Most times, it is not so crucial that it can’t wait.  But there again we are becoming addicted to being able to know everything that is available on any given topic within a matter of seconds and for some it is intoxicating.

The problem with all this knowledge is that it can turn us into educated idiots if we are not careful. God’s word is profitable for teaching, for correction and for training us in righteousness. Yet more people are logging into a search engine to find out stupid things like where the world’s biggest ball of yarn is located than they are their Bible app or opening up their Bible and reading it. We have become full of a lot of trivial information that at the end of the day does not benefit us in the least. But we complain that we just don’t have time to read our Bibles or go to church. And we get so busy with our social media and our various apps that we forget to pray.

We live in a computer age, I get it. Technology advances each and every day. But God’s word is constant, it remains the same. From HIs word, we can gain wisdom and He will give us discernment. There is no life situation that was not covered by God’s word. It holds as true today as it did thousands of years ago. God’s word should be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105).

One of the saddest things I have seen with all this advance in technology is the loss of human interaction. I am stunned to go into a restaurant and see an entire family or group of friends sitting at the table, each member glued to the screen of their phone. I often wonder why pay the kind of money you are paying for everybody to eat out? Why not make some sandwiches and allow everyone to sit at home on their phones, wouldn’t it be a lot cheaper?

I ask you to consider something today, if you have found yourself trapped on the information super highway, meaning you can’t wait to log in and glean the latest information whether it is through a news site, social media, search engine or any other site, please ask yourself if you are headed in the right direction.

God’s word will lead you in the way that you should go. All I am asking you today is that you give God’s word more time and consideration than you give to any social media, news, or search engine website. If your phone shows you a detailed record of your screen time and your phone usage, I challenge you to go to that and look at where you spend your time on your phone and how much time you spend there.

Are you logged into the right site? Are you logged into your relationship with Jesus? Or is Jesus just sitting there staring at the top of your head and the back of your hands as you type and scroll away?

Keep one thing in mind, when we face the Great White Throne of Judgment, I’m pretty sure we won’t have our smart phones in hand. When we are questioned about how we spent our time on earth or how solid our relationship with Jesus is, we won’t be able to Google or Bing the right answer, just sayin’.

Have a great day!
