But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death. Revelation 21:8 ESV
Let me start off by saying lying is a big deal. The Bible has a lot to say about it. Exodus 20:16, which gives us our 9th commandment, says, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”
Proverbs 12:22 says that lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are His delight. Proverbs 6:16-19 speaks of six things the Lord hates. Pride is listed first and lying right behind it.
Proverbs 19:9 says that a false witness will not go unpunished, and the one who breathes out lies will perish.
Psalm 101:7 ties in with our Scripture passage for today as it says, “No one who practices deceit shall dwell in My house; no one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes.”
Proverbs 12:19 tells us that truthful lips will endure forever, but a lying tongue is for the moment.
Colossians 3:9-10 says, “Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.”
When we began studying Ken Hamm’s Sunday School lessons, Answers in Genesis, we learned that there is one thing God cannot do. God cannot lie. He also won’t tolerate our lying as these Scripture passages indicate.
The old saying, “Liar, Liar, pants on fire!” Is one we probably heard chanted on the playground at school. But if we read Revelation 21:8, we see that it is a Biblically accurate statement.
Liars are going to be thrown into the lake of fire. They have no place in the new heaven that God is preparing for His people.
The Catholics have mortal and venial sins, but we Baptists believe that sin is sin. The Bible certainly does not teach that one sin is worse than another. Romans 3:23 says we all sin and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 6:23 says the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23 doesn’t say the wages of some sins is death. It doesn’t differentiate between levels of sin; it simply says the wages of sin is death. This encompasses all sinful behavior. There are no little sins or big sins.
My maternal grandmother used to say to me, “If someone lies to you, they will steal from you.” As a youngster, I didn’t really ponder that thought for long. I wasn’t sure what she meant, but I have come to understand that she meant that lying is a sin and if someone commits the sin of lying, they will have no problem committing any other sin.
I’ve come to realize that what my grandmother meant was lying is usually done in conjunction with other offensive behaviors such as stealing, adultery, and murder.
I came to realize the truth in grandma’s words. Being lied to is bad enough, but it usually comes with something much worse.
In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life and no man comes to the Father except through me.” In John 8:32, “And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” He goes on to say in verses 34-36, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. And the slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. So, if the son makes you free, you are free indeed.”
If you are a liar, you will someday literally experience your pants being on fire. You will experience the lake of fire and the eternal torment of hell. Don’t be a slave to sin which brings death but be set free by the truth found in God’s Holy Word.
Liars won’t be allowed into heaven. Don’t be turned away, trust in Jesus today. He is the truth, and He can set you free.
Have a great day!
