Knowing Where You Are Going

The LORD said to Abram:  Go out from your land, your relatives, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.  Genesis 12:1 HCSB

I can recall very few times in my life when I have set out walking or in a car and didn’t know where I was going. I rarely just take off with no idea where I am going to end up. Most of the time my travels have a planned destination and a purpose.

Could you just imagine leaving your homeland, your relatives, to go to some place that is completely unknown to you? Could you imagine packing up all you possess and gathering your spouse and your nephew and setting off for a foreign land but having no idea where this land might be?

Well, that’s what Abram did. In the beginning of Genesis 12 we see the beginning of the Abrahamic covenant. This was the covenant God made to Abraham to assure him that he would make him into a great nation. We now know that nation as Israel. God also promised to make Abraham’s name great. He promised to bless him. He also promised to protect him. So, at the age of 75, Abram set out with his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot answering the Lord’s call without knowing where he was going.

Hebrews chapter 11, also known as the hall of faith, mentions this.  Verse 8 says, “By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed and went out to a place he was going to receive as an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he was going.”

I think most of us would agree that we like knowing where we are going. It gives us a sense of security. Abram, however, trusted in God.

We live in a world today where I believe a lot of people have no idea where they are going. I believe many people have falsely been led to believe that they will go to heaven even as they live in lives of deliberate sin. They believe they can reject God and go to heaven. They believe they can just be a good person and go to heaven. These are all lies the devil wants us to believe. The devil wants us to believe we are headed for heaven while he is guiding us straight to hell.

So, I ask you today, do you know where you are going? Have you accepted Christ as your Savior and surrendered your life to Him? Have your travel arrangements been made for a one-way ticket to heaven when your time on earth is done? Or are you aimlessly wandering around like the Israelites did in the desert? Do you have no clue where you are going?

We never know when we will be called away from this earth. But we need to be sure of where we are going when we leave. Abram didn’t know where he was going but trusted God when God said he was going to a land God would show him and a land that would be his inheritance.

God led Abram to Canaan or what we know as the Promised Land. In John 14:2 Jesus said in His Father’s house are many mansions and He was going there to prepare a place for us. We are promised there is a heaven, but we must trust in Jesus and follow Him to get there. We must surrender our lives to Him just as Abram surrendered his life to God.

We must be willing to leave our lives of sin just as Abram left his home and his family to follow God to the Promised Land.

Do you know where you are going? Do you know without a doubt? My friend, if not, it’s time to know. It’s time to turn to Jesus. It’s time to surrender to Him and secure your travel plans. It’s time to arrange for eternal accommodations in His heavenly home.

Trust in Him today. Follow Him to an eternity in paradise. Be careful, because turning the other way can lead you to hell. Be sure you know where you are going.

Have a great day!
