It’s Just What Lost People Do

Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God and they shall be my people.” Therefore, come out from among them and be separate says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.
2 Corinthians 6:14-18 NKJV

Here lately, I find myself explaining away the evil behavior of others by saying, “It’s just what lost people do.” When I am attacked or hear of loved ones being attacked through social media or gossip and rumors, I try to bring comfort by saying, “It’s just what lost people do”, or, “that’s just how lost people behave.”

As we see the spread of evil in our world today, it’s hard not to see a major difference between the lost and the saved. We are not called to join forces with those who are lost. We are not called to act as they do. We are not called to even associate with them. We are called to share the gospel with them. Jesus tells us in Matthew 28:19, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.”

If you have ever tried to share the gospel, you know that some will receive it and believe it and others will ignore it. Jesus commanded His disciples to shake the dust off their feet from any home or town that would not receive them. He warns us in Matthew 7:6 not to give what is holy to dogs or cast our pearls before swine, lest they turn and trample us.

We are commanded to love the Lord our God with all our heart, all our soul, and all our mind. We are commanded to love our neighbors as ourselves. If we are unwilling to put God first, others second and ourselves last, we must question our salvation because that’s what saved people do.

When we look out on the world and see selfishness, greed, hatred, envy and strife we are looking at what lost people do. Just last week members of our church family were in a wreck because an unlicensed driver was flying up behind them and struck their vehicle causing their vehicle to be totaled and injuries to the family members, not requiring hospitalization, praise God. This driver had no concern for anyone else on the road. That’s just what lost people do. They put themselves first.

We see all kinds of evil going on in our world today. We see doctors performing unnecessary procedures in order to fatten their wallets. We see attacks on our law enforcement officers by those who have no respect for the law. We see law enforcement officers putting themselves in compromising positions. In our news headlines, we hear of unspeakable acts people commit against others. But, sadly, this is just how lost people behave.

My friend, if you have made a commitment to Christ to accept Him as your Savior and love Him with all you have, then you will not do what lost people do. You will put Him first and acknowledge Him in all you do (Proverbs 3:5-6). You will do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but will consider others more important than yourself (Philippians 2:3). You will not do the things that the lost do. You will share the gospel with them. But, if they refuse to receive it, you will not be unequally yoked with them. This is what saved people do.

We are living in a lost and dying world. The only way we can become a part of the solution is to live separate and apart and show the lost what it is like to live a life in Christ. They need to see God’s love through us. They need to experience forgiveness and love even when they are our enemies. We must be separate and not do the things they do. This is the only hope we have for them to get saved and no longer do the things that lost people do.

Take a good look at how you are living your life. Are you living like someone who is lost or someone who is saved? You can’t be both.

Have a great day!
