For we know the One who has said, Vengeance belongs to Me, I will repay, and again, The Lord will judge His people. It’s a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of a living God! Hebrews 10:30-31 HCSB
Our Scripture passage tells us that it’s a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of a living God. The problem is people think they will get away with whatever it is they are doing. The jails are full of people who never thought they would get caught. Divorce courts are filled with adulterers who thought their spouse would never discover their cheating. People lie and embezzle and do all sorts of things thinking they can get away with it. You may fool people, but we serve a living God. Whether you serve Him or not, He knows what you do. You keep no secrets from him.
It’s terrifying that there are so many people today living sinful lives thinking they will get away with it. Maybe they think God doesn’t know or care what they are doing. Maybe they think He will give them a free pass. I know when I lived my life deliberately sinning, I thought God would understand my situation. I thought I could justify my sin. I thought God and I had an understanding because of all the hardships I had been through. I was wrong. If you think you are getting away with your sin, you are wrong too.
Our Scripture passage comes from Hebrews chapter 10. I encourage you to read the entire chapter. In the verses before our Scripture passage, the author cautions us against deliberate sin.
Jesus provided the perfect sacrifice for our sin. This gives us hope, but it also says that we should not stay away from worship meetings. Verse 25 tells us we should attend church, even though some do not, and we should encourage each other more and more as we see the end drawing near. My friend, we are in the end times. I believe there has never been a more crucial time for us to come together to worship Him.
In the last part of Hebrews 10:26, the author lets us know God does not take sin lightly and it can be a terrifying experience. He tells us if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for our sins.
When we are lost or backsliding we tend to think we can get away with sin, but we can’t. I thought all my problems were caused by my circumstances and the people around me. But my sin was the cause of my troubles. I knew I was sinning but I made excuses. i justified it.
Verse 27 says we have a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire that consumes the adversaries. When we sin we are God’s enemy. Verse 29 goes on to say, “How much worse punishment do you think one will deserve who has trampled on the Son of God, regarded as profane the blood of the covenant by which He was sanctified and insulted the Spirit of grace? Now before you get up on your high horse and say, “Well, I never,” understand that when we sin, we trample Jesus Christ. We disregard the blood of the covenant. We reject His salvation and we insult the Spirit of grace. God freely offers His grace, but when we choose our sin over Him we insult the Spirit.
We often like to use the Scripture passage in Romans 12:19 which says “Vengeance is mine, says the Lord.” because we know if someone messes with us, a blood bought child of God, they mess with the Lord. This is true. God doesn’t like to see His people mistreated and He will handle it, you can rest assured. But he will also handle us if we disobey Him. He will seek vengeance on us if we go on deliberately sinning after we know better. We are warned in verse 31 that it is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of a living God!
Some say, “How can a loving, merciful God condemn people to hell?” He doesn’t condemn us to hell without giving us a chance to go to heaven. It’s a choice we make when we continue sinning. He only condemns those to hell who reject the salvation He freely offers.
I don’t want you to be caught unaware. I want you to understand that nothing is more terrifying than to fall into the hands of a living God! Jesus came to save you. Accept Him today. John 1:9 says He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Sin looks good, but it can turn scary pretty quickly. We never know when we will face judgment. It can mean being thrown into the lake of fire for eternity (Revelation 20:15). Now, that’s terrifying. God provides a way out. Don’t let it happen to you. Trust in Him today.
Have a great day!
