It Is What It Is

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways.” This is the LORD’S declaration. “For as heaven is higher than earth, so My ways are higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return there without saturating the earth and making it germinate and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat, so My word that comes from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please and will prosper in what I send it to do.”  Isaiah 55:8-11 HCSB

While there is no dictionary definition of the phrase, “it is what it is”, we can distinguish it’s meaning from the context in which it is used. It is usually used as a sign of frustration or resigned acceptance to a certain situation. From our scripture passage today, we can discern two things. First, we see that God’s ways and thoughts are higher than our thoughts. Secondly, we can discern that His word is true and was sent to earth to provide us with a guide or an instruction manual for our lives. That would seem to be simple enough, right?

When Moses asked God in Exodus 3:14, who he should tell Pharaoh in Egypt had sent him, God responded in verse 14 with, tell them I AM WHO I AM. He told Moses to tell them, I AM has sent me to you.

Do you know who he is? He is the Almighty God. He is our creator. He is our heavenly Father. He is God the Son who died to save us from our sins. He is the Holy Spirit who fills our hearts to help us resist temptation and who brings conviction when we do wrong. He is who He is and the sooner we accept that truth and apply it to our lives, the sooner He will bring us peace and joy.

Often times we try to complicate things by trying to control things. No good ever comes from this. Once we realize that we are not in control, but God is, we can relax. We don’t need to worry. We can take all that worry we have and give it all to God (Psalm 55:22, I Peter 5:7).

When I finally began to realize that all those things I was trying to control were out of my control, I gave it all over to God. I accepted that He was my creator. He was the One who was in complete control. He was the only One who had the ability to fix things. I resigned myself to the fact that this is how it was and how it had to be. It is what it is.

Our scripture passage today also tells us that His word will not return to Him empty but will accomplish what He wants it to accomplish and will prosper in what He sends it to do. God sent His word through Moses and the prophets and the apostles so that we might be saved. He sent His Son, Jesus, to show us how we should live our lives. He and His Holy Spirit guided the writings of the Old and New Testaments through Moses, His prophets and the apostles of Christ. If we reject His Word, this is on us. If we don’t know His Word and fall prey to false prophets, this is on us. It is given as a  guide or instructional manual for our lives. But, we have free will. We can embrace it or we can reject it.

You have probably heard the phrase, “ignorance of the law is no excuse.” Therefore, we should not whine, whimper and complain when we suffer because of our sinful behavior. I know we do that because I did that. Whining, whimpering and complaining did me no good. But, surrendering made all the difference in the world. I resigned myself to the fact that God’s word is what it is and what it is, is awesome. It brought healing and restoration into my life. It brought peace and joy where there had been chaos and turmoil. It brought salvation where there had been damnation.

Have you accepted that it is what it is? Have you accepted that God is Who He is? If not, you may have chaos and turmoil going on in your life. I know I did before I accepted Him for Who He truly is. But once I accepted Him, He cleaned up my mess and brought me peace and joy. He will do the same for you.

Have a great day!
