On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name?’ Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you! Depart from Me, you lawbreakers!’ Matthew 7:22-23 HCSB
In this Scripture passage, Jesus is saying many people will call out to Him on that day. That day refers to the day of judgment. He goes on to say these are people who have prophesied, driven out demons and performed miracles all in His name. Yet He will say to them He never knew them and to depart from Him. He goes on to call them lawbreakers.
This sounds harsh. It sounds like people who are trying to do good in Jesus’ name will be rejected and will not have an inheritance in the kingdom of God. So, when is good, good enough? And most importantly is your good, good enough?
Is following the Ten Commandments good enough? We know none of us can honestly keep all the commandments all the time. We know none of us are perfect. Romans 3:23 tells us we all sin and fall short of the glory of God. Is going to church enough? I praying enough? Is reading your Bible enough? Will we do all these things only to be rejected at the day of judgment?
If you go to Matthew 22:37-39, this is where the Pharisees tried to trip Jesus up by asking which of the Ten Commandments is most important. Jesus responded by summing up the Ten Commandments in this way. He said that we were to love Him with all our heart, all our soul and all our mind. He said secondly, we were to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.
I think the answer is in our heart. We are told in 2 Samuel 16:7 God doesn’t look at man’s outward appearance but sees the heart. If we love God with all our heart, we will do our best to keep His commands. We will want to know more and more about His great love for us through Bible study. We will want to communicate with Him through prayer.
I can assure you that you don’t want to wait on this one. We never know when we will be called away from this earth. We must be prepared for judgment day. In order to do so, we must get our heart right with God. If you are not sure if you good is good enough, pray Psalm 139:23, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way.”
The time to pray this prayer is now. We never know when it will be too late. Trust in God today. Ask Him to show you any area in your life that you need to improve. Trust in Him to walk with you through this process. Be sure your good is good enough.
Have a great day!
